Julie Strauss Bettinger received her master of fine arts in creative nonfiction from Goucher College in 2013. Her work as a freelance writer spans twenty-five years, primarily for publications in Florida and the southeast United States. Firstly, I must say that I am related to Patty and Chuck Mitchell, Rikki's human Mom and Dad. We live on opposite coasts of the country and have not met Rikki and only have heard of her abilities. I approached reading this book as if I knew nothing about the work of Chuck, Patty and Rikki. Surprisingly, I learned so much about the exceptional volunteer work, but also a great deal about the Mitchell's themselves that even as a relative I didn't know. As a book it is well written, and the stories of the children told with compassion. While parts can be difficult to read because of the subject matter, the book is uplifting and filled with hope.

What a good read! Received this book and casually started reading it...read the book from start to finish in one sitting! Ordered the book because a close friend was featured in Chapter 11. Rikki, a golden retriever and therapy dog, made a significant contribution in helping my friend Betsy to "come back" after a coma and confusion incurred in a severe car accident. Rikki demonstrated special skills in recognizing those in need of a friend, and knew just how to provide comfort and reassurance with a gentle nuzzle. She, and her trainer, are to be greatly commended for getting the State of Florida to change state laws to allow a therapy dog to accompany abused children into the courtroom when they must testify regarding traumatic details of their abuse. Highly recommend this book! Will be ordering more for friends.

Without any doubt, this is one book that is difficult to "put down." We've all heard that phrase before, but it is absolutely true for this true story of "Rikki," and all those who have been helped by this remarkable therapy dog and the animal-assisted therapy team who works with her. This account is far more than a story of an animal, for we learn how victims of crime are helped along the path to healing by a loving touch of a paw or nose. Having been a member of an active book club for many years, I will recommend "Encounters with Rikki" as our next selection.

Having done animal assisted therapy for over 25 years I was blown away by this story. Rikki's owner had great businesses sense that allowed him to get courts to make important changes that allowed a therapy dog in a courtroom. I wish I could find another great therapy dog. They are one in a million. I thoroughly enjoyed this well written book. Thank you for writing your story and thank you to your publisher too.

Julie artfully crafts a tale of humanity at its most courageous...because of partnership with dogs. The book meets all my criteria for a great non-fiction. It is thorough without being repetitive and leave a the reader with the satisfaction of a.complete story and the desire to know and do more. I will never look at my own sweet dog the same again.

This was a great read. I would recommend it to all my friends.I believe they will love this book as much as I did.

Many people argue whether Francisco Franco (1892-1975, he died at age 82) was a good or bad man, helpful to Spain and its people or a man who pursued self-interest, whether he was intelligent or barbaric. Some praise him for saving the country from Communism. Others stress that he rode the coattails of Hitler and Mussolini to power, which he misused, a man who felt his own way was the only right way, who stressed the “Christian Civilization” even on his death bed. He insisted on the “traditional role” for women, meaning they were restricted to only certain tasks.Hourly History gives us good information about this man. Among much else, we learn that: He was the longest running dictator in history. He was the dictator of Spain for 36 years. He was a borderline fascist. He killed many of his opponents, between 15,000 and 50,000 people. He tried to control Spain even after his death.

Although understanding that a biography can not easily be disclosed in depth in a 40 minutes reading book format, I must say that, in my opinion, this is just a "political correct" focused work, well far away from the actual biography of the subject. You can feel this approach after the first 10 lines. Many and important events from different sides missed(?)absolutely critical to understand that difficult time in Spain,s History.Everybody knows that General Franco was a dictator for 36 years. There is no much more deployed in this work that could help to understand the dictator,s personality besides de classic cruelty in the aftermath of the war and those things.Dissapointing.

Though not quite a 5 star rating, this overview of Spain's Franco is somewhere between 4 and 5 stars. Nicely written and informative, a nice view of a piece of history. The man, Franco, contending he was a supporter of Christendom, was rather UN-Christian-like in his rise to power, was an able military man, sometimes Statesman and conflicted human being. As with almost any country, the introduction of some form of a free-market process usually improves a country's economics, as is the case with Spain under Franco in his waning years. Great man? Not so sure, but a couple of things in his favor; his resistance to Hitler and his slowly giving into the idea of a democracy.

Sums up his life rather succinctly but (somehow) just does not leave the reader with a clear 'picture' of the man himself.Could also do with better proof-reading to clear up a bunch of grammatical mistakes in the use of words, punctuation, etc....

Ruthless yet effective would be a succinct version of the book. Most writers and arists, coming as many do from the leftist fringe, have focused on the period of the Spanish Civil War and Franco's seldom-denied harshness. The book does well in showing those 4 years as part of a 40-year strategy of keeping Spain out of foreign entanglements. An excellent short biography.

Although well written, this Hourly History Book is almost exactly like another Hour History Book titled Spanish Civil War. Both books tells how Hitler, Mussolini and Stalin interfered with the War. They tested their weapons and personnel during The Spanish Civil War.

A short but thorough history of Franco, the man ,the leader The Spain !He was quite brilliant and wary of outsiders.Courted by both the Axis Powers and the Alies, he was able to stay somewhat neutral and survive.

Clearly written, interesting, succinct story of Spain's brutal military leader and dictator during Spain's civil war, through WWII, and his death in 1975. This book, coupled with Hourly History's book on the Spanish Civil War provide an excellent overview on Spain from the 1930s to 1975.

I knew a story by Ms. Pope would bring on tears and end happily, but I didn't realise the different depths of emotions that I would experience. Sunny and Julian...once they meet, the path is set for them to go on a journey of discovery together...and a journey of love. Heartbreak, family, friends, mental illness and strength are all captured in these pages. The mystery of Sunny's mother leaves you rooting for the beautiful soul that is Sunny while also hoping for healing and closure. Julian has his own obstacles, but without a doubt, the softening of him because of having Sunny in his life can be felt. I loved this novel. I can't wait for the next story! 💜

This book was so good, it had everything I long for in a book, laughter, happiness, some sadness and amazing chemistry between characters. The characters had such depth to them they felt real and had you rooting for them by the end!! Love Jamie Pope books!!

But for that she needs an attorney.Julian King is a high-powered lawyer who knows nothing of family law. A former pro football player, he is determined to prove himself at his firm and make partner. He wants nothing to do with Sunny and her pro-bono case.Of course, Sunny and Julian end up working together and they are drawn close to each other and discover they have some surprisingly similar experiences.Mostly, this is a sweet romance. At first, Julian was rather unlikable but as his attraction to Sunny grew, he became a different person and the relationship and the reading became more enjoyable. The novel’s pace was a bit slow and at times it was difficult to engage with the search for the mysterious and elusive mother.Overall, this was a pleasant read and I would recommend it to those wanting a light, sweet romance. 3 stars.I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Sunny is now a social worker with a passion for helping children. Once she turned 18 and started studying she has dedicated her whole life to helping others. For Sunny this is personal as when she was a child, she grew up in an unstable home with a mother who had mental health issues. When she was little, her mother abandoned her and Sunny was found hiding in the closet by some friendly Police Officers. From there, Sunny was put into foster care and eventually found a great home where she lived until her foster mother passed away. Sunny has found herself attached and heavily invested in a little girl Grace's care. Grace reminds Sunny a lot of herself and has finally found a loving home with a mother who wants to adopt her. The thing is though that Grace's birth mother has tracked her down and is sending money and letters telling Grace that she will be back for her and telling her to foster mother thank you for looking after her little girl. Sunny becomes actively involved and gets the idea in her head that Grace may be her long-lost sister as like her Grace calls her Mum - Mama, and her parents were mixed race. Sunny employs the help of top rising attorney Julian King and in doing so will show Julian what it is to love one another sincerely and that underneath all the hardness he can still enjoy true romance, and that love does not have to act like a business transaction. I have to admit I had high hopes for the book and felt a bit disappointed with the ending and had imagined it taking a different turn. I do hope that we get more of Sunny's story and that we find out what happened to her mother once and for all, as seems like she had fallen off the face of the earth.

I am torn about this book. I read the first edition many years ago and found it helpful, but reading the current version left me with some concerns. Here are the positives and negatives, as I see them. For background, I've been diagnosed with hypothyroidism for over 20 years and have done the rounds of medical professionals including both GP's and endocrinologists in that time. I'm NOT a medical professional by any stretch of the imagination.Pros:* The author is a well-known patient advocate who clearly knows a lot about hypothyroidism.* There is a lot of information in this book, some of which could be very helpful to new patients (as long as you read it with a bit of skepticism; see below).Cons:* The science is a bit dated, and the author tends to talk in general terms about research but doesn't provide a lot of actual studies. There are very few if any citations.* The writer's tone is antagonistic and somewhat condescending towards Western medical doctors in general. She seems to imply that a well-informed patient knows more than an endocrinologist, and honestly I don't believe that's usually the case. (Although I have met some docs that made me wonder. There is a range of competence in every profession).* The section on symptoms includes a broad list of all the things that can be caused by hypothyroidism, but not much information on what are the common issues vs. which ones are more rare. If you don't read it with some skepticism, every problem you have ever had could have been caused by hypothyroidism. (Or might not, because it could legitimately be something else. If you are busy blaming your thyroid, you could miss something important like diabetes or heart disease).* She seems to write from a perspective that everyone should be medicated for thyroid issues, even if the lab results don't say so. This can actually be dangerous because being hyperthyroid has its own side effects, including osteoporosis and heart issues.* The sections on alternative medicine felt to me like she's pushing these as superior solutions, without citing any research about safety / efficacy. Personal anecdotes are helpful but they are not a substitute for legit research, in my mind anyway.I'm not a medical practitioner so I don't think that I'm overly biased. I do, however, like my medical care to be based on research, and while I do use alternative medicine such as chiropractic, I wouldn't have my hypothyroidism treated by anyone other than a medical doctor.

This book has valuable information in it. I personally got real tired of arguing with my endocrinologist since 2009 so I bought this book and read it and told that Doctor and his PA which medicine I wanted to try which was armour thyroid, the generic is NP thyroid. It is a natural medication not a synthetic one. I realize what works for one person might not work for another. Proper medication makes a big difference. Now days a patient really needs to get informed about their medical condition and their medicine options so they don't fall through the cracks. Doctor's offices are revolving doors and more often than not they won't have or make the time to tell you what a good book will. What I learned on my own and this book confirmed was that fibromyalgia is related to hypothyroidism. The quality of my life has been so much better in the past two years. Thank you Mary J Shomon.

I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer at age 25 and underwent a total thyroidectomy, followed by RAI. Over the course of the past three years (that's about how long I've been dealing with being thyroid-less), I have experienced everything from hair falling out, brittle nails, fatigue, heart palpitations, muscle cramps, and ridiculous weight gain. I'm not overweight or fat by any means, but I went from being 145 to 160 in a matter of months (and that's even with following a Paleo-style diet, doing 3 Whole30's over the past two years, and running 3-7 miles a couple times per week).With my weight skyrocketing (despite watching/cutting calories, making sure to exercise, etc), I've been getting more depressed (despite my strong support system of my boyfriend and family, both who reassure me that I am just fine) and turned to Amazon to maybe find a book to help me. I came across this and bought it, not sure if it would speak to me since I am not hypothyroid by blood test levels (thyroid cancer patients are initially run hyperthyroid to make sure the cancer does not come back). But I was frustrated at FEELING hypothyroid despite technically being hyper.Turns out that this book actually DOES pertain to me. The author mentions right off the bat that not having a thyroid, even if running "hyper" by blood test, you are still considered hypo. Not all of the chapters in the book pertained to me, but I just skipped those and focused on the ones that did. There's even a chapter near the end just for people who have had thyroid cancer.I really wish someone gave me this book right after my surgery. It was SO comforting to hear the stories of the author (and others) going through the same things that I am right now. When Shomon mentioned that she tried cutting calories/increasing exercise and still gained 1-2 lbs per week, I was so happy.....because it finally made me feel like I'm not alone. I love the chapter on weight loss tips and how Shomon states, straightforwardly, that weight loss for the hypothyroid person WILL be hard. We CANNOT compare ourselves to others or what our bodies did pre-hypothyroidism....because that's not how our bodies work anymore. She states that it's downright unfair that we have to deal with this, but it's not our fault...it's medical...and we have to work with it as best as we can. Persistence & patience are key. While at some level I knew all of this already, it was so comforting to hear it from her; it really helped me start to change the way I think.After reading this book, I feel more empowered. I came to it for weight loss help, but now have a better understanding of my condition (even though, as a science teacher/general science nerd, I thought I already knew a lot!). There were some symptoms that I have that I didn't even realize were thyroid-related....and it's just so nice to know WHY my body is acting the way it is rather than wonder what's wrong with me.This book is a definite must-read for anyone who finds themselves thyroid-less. I am thankful I picked it up!

As a Hashimoto's sufferer since 2014, I was happy to receive this book as a resource for my condition. Well written and easy to read/understand, the author speaks in a way that is relatable and interesting. I'd certainly recommend this to anyone with hypothyroidism or feeling the symptoms.

I know that sounds like a stupid headline, but it's true. I could google Taylor Swift and prove some of these facts wrong. I am a big Swiftie, and I was excited to purchase this book, but I dislike the format, and many of the facts seem completely improvised (for example, it says that her Twitter is taylor_swift, and that her favorite drink is Diet Coke simply because she advertised for them). In the quiz section, there are some interesting facts, but the answers are right below them, which makes it very difficult to actually attempt to take the quiz. The photos are kind of low-quality and some of them have watermarks from other places on them. Also, the quotes section is largely lacking in good quotes. Many of these support the stereotypes about her, and I have read far better quotes in other places. Finally, this book is incredibly short. It's not really worth the $10 it costs for the paperback, but if you'd like to learn some slightly unreliable facts about Taylor Swift, it may be worth the $3 it costs for the Kindle Edition. (by the way, this is a review by George's daughter, not George himself)

I was shocked when I received the book/pamphlet. I bought it in a hurry and felt really stupid for not being more careful and reading up more before buying.1. The book is really thin and not worth the price. I was embarrassed because i bought it as a gift and now i look like a cheapie!2. The printing is so terrible, half the headlines and words at the top of the page were chopped off (don't tell me it's some fancy layout)3. Speaking of layouts, it looks like a 10 year old did it for a class project.4. Speaking of 10 year olds, my 10 year old was pointing out all the mistakes and grammar errors.5. I feel quite cheated and I hope the person who is responsible for printing this "thing" sends loads of money to Taylor Swift or at least her favourite charity, to make up for this sad way of taking advantage of Taylor Swift's popularity.6. I think Amazon should stop selling this product. It's giving a bad name to Amazon.

Some of the pictures in it are pretty low quality. I liked the quiz thing, but the answers are right under the questions so I saw the answer before I even finished reading the questions. Some of the information is incorrect, as well (her twitter handle is @taylorswift13, not @taylor_swift). I knew most of the facts in it, but I did enjoy some of the things I didn't know. Overall, it's probably exactly what should be expected for $10.

This book got many things wrong. First, sloppy editing and layout. Second, 'Swiftie' was spelled wrong. Third, you said that her Twitter handle is @taylor_swift, which it is not. (It is actually @tayorswift13.) Fourth, one of her quotes is wrong! It was written as, "SHOUTING speaks so much louder than screaming tantrums," when in reality, the actual quote is "SILENCE speaks so much louder than screaming tantrums..." And last of all, the grammar on the last page is atrocious. All of these problems could have been easily fixed with a simple double check. Plus, its extremely short and the pictures are low quality. Not happy.

My friend loved this book I got her for Xmas. It's perfect for a young girl fan of Taylor swift. The onlydownside I feel as though there are not a lot of pages ? it's a thin book .

Only a couple dozen pages of info., with font size 40. Enough text to equate in the entire book to equate to one paragraph. Bought as a present and embarrassing to give

I thought this was going to be a longer book. It is more of basic info from the internet printed on 10 pieces of paper. Ah well, my 8 year old thinks it is the coolest thing ever.

As someone who always focused on trying to make my healthy body into a size 2 or 4 which makes no sense for my height or bone structure, I am finished with diets.
