If you need to get into Java/SQL/JDBC, boy are you going to be glad you ran across this review. McCarty's book is probably one of the best tech books I've read. This book is WAY under-rated on Amazon. I first got it a couple of years ago, it helped me a TON, and I was always mystified by the reviews here (at Amazon). Just ran across the JavaWorld review, and thought I'd post it here, to do McCarty justice (thanks for a great helpful book Dr. McCarty), and to pass along the word to anyone else interested in this area. Specific comments1) It is a bit dated now (Java1.2+), some of the methods are deprecated (will still compile - this is Java, not Micro$oft - but you do get a warning).2) The main concentration/subject matter is on using Java to send SQL commands to query from and add to a relational database; heavy on the SQL and database design. If that's what you're after, get this book.3) You need to know Java first.4) The book does use an Access database. I think that's because most of us some version of Office kicking around. However, you are (contrary to some reviews here) by no means restricted to using Access. Anything JDBC can bridge to is fine. The Access examples in the beginning of the book are simply to show people, who may not know, how to set up an Access database. If you use a different database, you'll have to figure out how to do that yourself - it think it's reasonable to assume most people looking at this book will know how to do that. I am talking about setting up the database, not accessing it - the book covers accessing it, using JDBC, which is what we want to do.4) For some bizzare reason, my copy's CD came with VisualJ++. I tried it, assuming it must have some kind of valuable feature that Sun Java didn't have. It didn't and I went back to Sun. You certainly don't need to use VJ++ to use the book - in fact, I couldn't get the example code to run in Microsoft's Java. Everything worked fine with Sun's Java, except, as I mentioned, some of the methods are deprecated in Java1.2 (aka Java2).5) The writing is crystal-clear, to the point, and spare. I suspect McCarty may have taught a class on this for a few semesters before releasing the book. Feedback from students can be great in learning what is unclear about one's explanations, and it can be real hard learn otherwise.
I needed a book to give an efficient overview of SQL as used with the JDBC. This book has not suited my needs. In the "Why I Wrote This Book" section of the Introduction, the author says "There are many good books on SQL, but almost all focus on interactive SQL..." As far as I know, SQL is SQL whether it is used interactively (queries entered directly by end-user) or from application code. Also, this book contains way too much Microsoft Access and Microsoft SQL Server specific SQL, not the makings for a database-independent Java application.
The book I have been looking for. Recommended for database programmer who wants to make available their data in the Web or Intranet using Java and JDBC. Great sample programs that really works. I learned a lot from this book about database programming with Java and JDBC. I liked the part where the author detailed nicely the steps how a database connection is established and how the different pieces of interface interacts to store and retrieve data from the database. Great book. More power to you Bill.
I have found this book to be a good starting place for anyone that would like to write database apps in java. Yes you to can build a database application for the web in no time.
Nowhere in the description of this book does it say that you need J++ or Access, however, all the examples required them. All I wanted to do was learn SQL, not purchase J++ and Access, nor did I want to learn them. My goal (when I grew up) was to learn SQL as applied to any database, hopefully IBM DB2.
A pretty awesome book if you want to get into Java/SQL DB building.... Tons of code examples.

The I Can Read! Adventure Bible: Great Stories of the Bible has been a big hit in our home. As soon as we received this book in the mail, my kids were excited to read it. That is one of the things I like about the I Can Read! series, the kids are able to read it on their own.When I get one of these books, at the right reading level for my kids, I can be confident that as soon as they open to the first page that they will be able to read with ease. Sometimes, with other books, they can get frustrated. They begin the book excited, but by the time they reach page two they give up because there are too many hard words. That is not the case with this series. With these books, the stories are written in a way that has challenging subject matter but uses simple words for children.The fact that my eight year old son could pick this book up and read the story of Esther to his sister, with ease, was a real confidence booster for him. This book contains the following stories:God’s Great CreationNoah’s VoyageJoseph the DreamerMoses Leads the PeopleRuth and NaomiBrave Queen Esther The illustrations are entertaining and the stories captivated my children. It is a hardy book that feels like it is going to last for a good long while, even with the beatings that my kids can put on a book! We have beginning readers in our family so we are always on the hunt for new easy to read books to encourage their newly acquired skills. The I Can Read! line from Zonderkidz has many great selections in the different reading levels. Right now we are on level 2 which is designed for developing readers that need a little bit of help.Great Stories of the Bible is a compilation of six I Can Read! books from the level 2 group. The six stories include: The creation story in Genesis. Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego winding up in the fiery furnace. The touching story of Ruth and Naomi. An introduction to some of the miracles that Jesus preformed during His earthly ministry. The story of the prodigal son. And finally the account of the good Samaritan.We have been using the Adventure Bible for Early Readers for our Bible time. Great Stories of the Bible uses the same art work so it is very familiar to our kids. I think that helps them commit to memory the content of the story. Another thing that I like about this book is that it gives my kids a beginning feel of chapter books. It makes me smile to see how excited they are to use a bookmark. I'm thrilled with the sense of accomplishment the kids get as they make their way through this book. They feel like they are reading a big kid book, but it is still at their reading level so they are also encouraged in their reading journey.I received a copy of this book to facilitate my review.
I was rather impressed with this "I Can Read! Adventure Bible: Great Stories of the Bible" book, illustrated by David Miles! I don't normally buy these kinds of books because they usually don't hold up very well with small children, but this book is excellent! It features 6 books in 1 in a beautiful bright red hardcover!It is designed as a Reading Level 2, which means Reading with Help. I would say it would be appropriate for most children finishing Kindergarten and going into First Grade. The six books included are:-God's Great Creation-Facing the Blazing Furnace-Ruth and Naomi-Miracles of Jesus-A Father's Love-The Good SamaritanThe end of each story features a small tidbit about the main characters, the theme Bible verse and a few simple questions about the story just read.I was really happy about the way this book was written. The words are easy to understand, and there's not too many words on each page. Each page has approximately 2 to 6 short sentences, making it simple enough for beginner readers! The pictures are bright and colorful and pleasing to the eye. The stories aren't super long so they hold the reader's attention. I can read the entire book to my 4 1/2 year old in one sitting and she was eager to hear more! I would highly recommend this book to parents of small children. It will be a nice book that I can take turns reading with my child, as she is just learning to sound out words.
