Review

“A compelling and complex mystery, strong storytelling, and lyrical writing combine for an engrossing read.”—Publishers Weekly“In The Shadow Land, Elizabeth Kostova, a master storyteller, brings vividly to life an unfamiliar country—Bulgaria—and a painful history that feels particularly relevant now. You won’t want to put down this remarkable book.”—Claire Messud, author of The Woman Upstairs “In this brilliant work, what appears at first a minor mystery quickly becomes emblematic of a whole country’s hidden history. Lyrical and compelling, The Shadow Land proves a profound meditation on how evil is inflicted, endured, and, through courage and compassion, defeated. Elizabeth Kostova’s third novel clearly establishes her as one of America’s finest writers.”—Ron Rash, author of The Risen “The Shadow Land is thrilling, and not just as a gripping tale. It’s also thrilling to watch such a talented writer cast her spell. The central character actually begins this deft novel in an urn, only to emerge as one of the most memorable characters I’ve encountered in a long time.”—Richard Russo, author of Everybody’s Fool “Transporting . . . draws us into Bulgarian history and character revelation like an elegant, mysterious labyrinth. Page-turning, evocative, and richly imagined.”—Dominic Smith, author of The Last Painting of Sara de VosPraise for Elizabeth Kostova’s The Historian“Quite extraordinary . . . Kostova is a natural storyteller. . . . She has refashioned the vampire myth into a compelling contemporary novel, a late-night page-turner.”—San Francisco Chronicle“Hypnotic . . . a thrill ride through history.”—The Denver Post“Part thriller, part history, part romance . . . Kostova has a keen sense of storytelling and she has a marvelous story to tell.”—Baltimore Sun“Kostova’s vampire is no campy Lugosi knockoff. . . . Blending history and myth, Kostova has fashioned a version so fresh that when a stake is finally driven through a heart, it inspires the tragic shock of something happening for the very first time.”—NewsweekPraise for The Swan Thieves“Exquisite.”—The Boston Globe“Engrossing.”—O: The Oprah Magazine“Stunning . . . A beautifully written tale of art, love and an obsession triggered by both.”—Associated Press

Gripping as it is, The Shadow Land is no light entertainment. Thoroughly researched, written “in a spirit of respectful grief for those whose lives were touched by the real history on which it is based” (p.479), it is a compassionate, timely, and effective blend of real history, including 21st-century political corruption, and fiction. It takes the reader to a small country, a country whose thuggish post-WW2 leaders tried to justify their actions by inventing political crimes, and pays an eloquent tribute to two generations of intelligent and well-educated Bulgarians whose dignity, ambitions, property, health, and even lives fell victim to the Balkan version of Stalinism. The labor camps, the exiles and deportations, the denial of access to foreign language schools and university education, the Communist Party controlled professional jobs and art production, the spying, the intimidation, the stigma of “intellectualism”, the closed borders, the jamming of foreign radio broadcasts, the and so much more: very little of that is known to fiction readers and the general public in the US. This may not be Kostova’s most spectacular book, but it consolidates one’s faith in the effectiveness of the art she practices so well.

The Shadow Land was a fantastic read! I loved it. Elizabeth Kostova weaves a tale of adventure, mystery, sorrow and love in this story set in Bulgaria. The story of Stoyan Lazarov's life is a triumph and I enjoyed his character as well as Alexandra Boyds. A must read.I give The Shadow Land 5 stars for its compelling story.I would recommend this story to everyone.

Recommended by a friend who loved it, I struggled with the prose. If you like description in painstaking detail of non-essential elements: color of a flower, luggage, facial expressions, etc. you may love this book.Little plot, little character development.Had potential but too ponderous.

Elizabeth Kostova's new novel begins as a mystery set in Bulgaria involving a lost urn of human ashes. Upon arriving in Sophia, a young American visitor finds the urn in a cab and is aided in her search to restore the urn to its rightful owners by a cabbie with police work and poetry in his past. The suspense ratchets up considerably as the authorities take a lethal interest in the deep secrets of the family that has lost possession of the urn. Among various delights, Ms. Kostova offers a breathtaking portrayal of the interior life of an artist condemned to a gulag in the mountains. I highly recommend The Shadow Land.

I enjoyed this novel and it's descriptions of Bulgaria. My only negative is that the story takes too long to develop. The ending is very satisfying but the story meanders aimlessly during certain sections. All in all this is a wonderfully written novel.

At times, parts were a little drawn out, but that's just my opinion. All-and-all, great writing and a good read. I still liked The Historian the best. I really like this writer's style and will probably read her third book as well.

I am enamored with The Shadowland. My kind of summer read. I was transported to and felt like I experienced first hand traveling across Bulgaria. This is a story of love, loss, and endurance. Love of music, family, and country. Loss of a loved one. Loss of all the freedoms we take for granted under communist rule. The Shadowland personifies the power of keeping the things we love in our minds and hearts in order to endure extreme hardships. We experience communism and its use of forced labor camps. Knowledge of this past is a threat in the present. Everything is there for the reader, though I was so engrossed and on the journey with Alexandra I missed it and shared in her discovery. It is a story of how far one person will go to help/save another. It is also a reminder of how much we take for granted that our freedoms are a given in life. I loved this book.

Very interesting characters and settings in both present and past. Ms. Kostova provides insights into a country's culture, people, and communist past with which not many people are familiar while keeping up suspense.
