About the Author

Andrea Harvey BVSc DSAM(Feline) DipECVIM-CA MRCVS Andrea graduated from the University of Bristol in 2000 and, after some time in small animal practice, returned to Bristol to undertake a 3-year residency in feline medicine, funded by the Feline Advisory Bureau, remaining as FAB Clinical Fellow in Feline Medicine from 2005 to 2010.  She has since continued to work closely with FAB and the International Society of Feline Medicine (ISFM) on various initiatives, particularly the ISFM Cat Friendly Practice Accreditation scheme.  In 2012 she moved to Australia, where she works as a feline clinician in the Small Animal Specialist Hospital, Sydney. Andrea is also the ISFM representative for Australasia, and a tutor on the CVE/ISFM distance education course in feline medicine. She lectures widely internationally and has written numerous articles and book chapters. Andrea is passionate about all aspects of feline medicine, health and welfare, and about supporting and inspiring colleagues in practice to provide the best care for their feline patients. Séverine Tasker BSc BVSc(Hons) PhD DSAM DipECVIM-CA PGCertHE MRCVS After graduation from Bristol Veterinary School in 1994, Séverine spent time in practice working for the PDSA before moving to the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies, Edinburgh to take up an FAB Residency in Feline Medicine.  She returned to Bristol in 1999, completing her PhD on feline haemoplasma infection in 2002.  She is now a Senior Lecturer in Small Animal Medicine at Bristol.  Working in the Feline Centre and on the molecular side of the diagnostic services of Langford Veterinary Services, she is interested in all aspects of feline medicine, especially infectious diseases and haematological disorders.  Séverine adores all things feline and particularly enjoys teaching veterinary students, nurses and colleagues a holistic approach to feline cases.  She has authored over 100 papers and book chapters and has been an invited speaker at conferences in Europe, USA and Australasia.  In 2008 she was awarded the BSAVA Woodrow Award for outstanding contributions to small animal medicine.

I bought this book since a product I endorse, Kitty Kollar, is recommended in it and I wanted a copy. Upon review of the entire volume, I was impressed at how well the book is organized and the clarity of the information. As the title implies, it appears to be targeted primarily to new graduates who need to know "a little about a lot" as soon as possible. The first chapter about outfitting a cat practice was especially comprehensive as it refers to behavior, safe handling practices, etc. All of this was likely covered in vet school but having such a book as a quick reference would be helpful. As a non-professional whose spouse is a vet, I will keep this volume at home to use as a refresher.

Although this manual was geared for the professional, I bought it to better understand my cats' medical needs after my oldest girl was diagnosed with CKD. I found that it is easy to read for a layperson like me, and the clear diagrams and photos help explain everything well.

I would highly recommend this book. It is clear and simple to follow. It does miss some things out so is not an encyclopedia / comprehensive guide to all diseases that we come across but I also purchased The Feline Patient by Norsworthy and found that the combination of both a comprehensive guide and a quick-reference book such as this is great for a vet interested in feline medicine.

Preface This book describes how genetic algorithms (GAs)can be utilized for developing effcient computer-aided design (CAD)tools for performing VLSI design optimiza- tion,layout generation,and chip testing tasks.It is written primarily for practicing CAD engineers and academic researchers who want to apply GAs and analyze their performance in solving large VLSI/CAD optimization problems. Although GAs were developed over twenty-five years ago, not much research and experimental work have been done to ascertain their capabilities in solving complex and extremely large constrained combinatorial optimization problems that one generally encounters in designing VLSI/CAD tools. Unlike graph theoretic approaches, integer/linear programming, simulated annealing, and a host of other optimization techniques that have been quite successfully deployed as core problem solving methods in various VLSI/CAD tools, GAs are not yet as widely used. We hope that this book will motivate readers to widely apply GAs in developing VLSI/CAD tools. For this purpose, we have carefully selected a few important VLSI design automation problems with unique problem solving features, and we have shown how in each case, various aspects of the GA, namely its chromosome, crossover and mutation operators, etc., can be separately formulated to solve these problems. In order to estimate the e ffectiveness of GAs, we have compared their performance with conventional algorithms. While most of the solution techniques proposed in this book have been developed in an ad hoc and exploratory manner,the basic formulations of the GAs are, nevertheless, applicable to a range of related problems. However, further experimentation is needed to find better settings of GA parameters for each problem. If the empirical study is also combined with insightful mathematical modeling, then we strongly believe that the performance of the genetic-based tools can be further improved and real payoffs of the use of GAs in CAD tools can be demonstrated. The main objectives of this book are: to aggregate various genetic-based research work performed by the authors and their coresearchers at The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and the University of Illinois, Urbana,as well as by colleagues at the University of Iowa, Iowa City; to educate readers in the VLSI/CAD community about the merits of GAs by demonstrating some sample solution techniques; to motivate readers to develop improved techniques with appropriate mathematical formulations; and finally, to encourage readers working in other fields of science and engineering to explore the GA as a powerful method for solving problems in their areas of work. We have included sufficient introductory material to enable a reader who is not well-versed in GAs to know how to use them effectively. It is our sincere hope that in the future, GAs will prove to be a general-purpose heuristic method for solving a wider class of engineering and scientific problems. Another purpose of this book is to foster research work on the development of distributed CAD tools that run efficiently on a network of workstations. Originally, Prof.Mazumder's research group was intrigued by the intrinsic parallelism of GAs and the group embarked upon this research work with a view toward developing a suite of VLSI layout tools that can efficiently utilize the distributed resources of a network of workstations loosely connected through a local area network. With the availability of inexpensive personal computers and workstations that can be linked via an Ethernet type network, the CAD tool development environment has dramatically shifted from a single powerful uniprocessor to a cluster of networked desk-top computers. The main goal for developing this suite of distributed layout tools was to demonstrate that GAs are uniquely suited for running concurrently on a number of workstations without requiring much communication overhead. In the recent past, some existing layout tools have been successfully modified to run efficiently on tightly coupled shared-memory (e.g., Sequent's bus-based Balance) and message-passing (e.g., Intel's hypercube) machines. In order to achieve high speedup, these algorithms require frequent data exchange between two or more processors in a cluster. However, by and large, conventional layout algorithms are not amenable to parallelism on a network of workstations. As VLSI chips are reaching the integration level of one hundred million transistors and more, chip design tasks are becoming extremely complex and computation intensive. New generation CAD tools must be able to run in parallel over a large number of inexpensive computers interconnected together by a local area network. It will therefore be worthwhile to invest an effort in developing genetic-based CAD tools. Organization of the Book There are three distinct classes of VLSI problems which the book addresses: (1) the layout class of problems,such as circuit partitioning, placement, and routing; (2) the design class of problems, including power estimation, technology mapping, and netlist partitioning; and, finally, (3) reliable chip testing through efficient test vector generation. All these problems are intractable in the sense that no polynomial time algorithm can guarantee optimal solution of the problems, and they actually belong to the dreadful NP-complete and NP-hard categories. The book is organized as follows. Chapter 1 provides an introduction to the two basic types of GAs: the simple genetic algorithm and the steady-state algorithm. GA terminology is introduced and genetic operators are discussed. A simple test generation example is used to illustrate the operation of a GA, and then GAs for problems in VLSI Design, Layout, and Test automation are introduced. Chapter 2 addresses the problem of circuit partitioning. It begins with a review of previous approaches used and then describes a steady-state GA for solving the problem. Experimental results are presented and a hybrid GA that incorporates local optimization is described. Chapter 3 focuses on automatic placement for standard cells and macro cells. A GA for standard cell placement is described, results are presented, and the genetic approach is compared to simulated annealing. In addition, an algorithm that combines a GA and simulated annealing for macro cell placement is discussed. Chapter 4 discusses problems encountered in macro cell routing. It begins by addressing the Steiner problem in a graph. Previous approaches are reviewed, a GA to solve the problem is described, experimental results are presented, and comparisons are made to previous work. Finally,the GA for the Steiner problem in a graph is applied to the macro cell routing problem and results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach. Chapter 5 describes a GA for FPG technology mapping, which is a key phase of logic synthesis and involves partitioning the circuit into a number of subcircuits that are not necessarily disjoint. Application of circuit partitioning to pseudo-exhaustive testing is also addressed, and experimental results are given for FPGA technology mapping. Chapter 6 discusses the problem of automatic test generation. A GA framework for test generation is presented and results of experiments to evaluate various GA parameters are given. Integration of GA s with deterministic algorithms and incorporation of problem-specific knowledge into a GA are discussed. The chapter concludes by describing how the GA framework can be applied to the problem of test sequence compaction. Chapter 7 deals with power estimation for VLSI circuits. In particular, it describes a GA for estimating the peak power dissipation in a circuit. The peak power estimates provide a tight lower bound on the actual peak power and are significantly more accurate than previous approaches. The actual sequences of vectors that achieve these bounds are also generated by the GA. The effects of the delay model used on the quality of the results are also discussed. Chapter 8 explores parallel implementations of GAs for standard cell placement and test generation. The migration operator for parallel GAs is introduced in this chapter. GAs that require little communication between processors and are therefore suitable for a network of workstations are described. Experimental results are presented to illustrate the effects of various communication patterns. Very good speedups are achieved, as demonstrated for several benchmark circuits. Chapter 9 concludes the book by giving guidelines for devising a GA to solve a new problem in the area of VLSI design, layout, and test automation or in another domain of science and engineering. Problem encoding, fitness function,type of GA, and GA parameters are addressed, and the genetic approach is compared to conventional approaches. Jeffrey S. Saltz is currently an Associate Professor at Syracuse University, in the School of Information Studies. His research and teaching focus on helping organizations leverage information technology and data for competitive advantage. In order to stay connected to the “real world”, Jeff consults with clients ranging from professional football teams to Fortune 500 organizations. I used the book in a class taught by one of the author's J. Saltz. The book builds on basic concepts about working with information, and adds tools and concepts. By the end, as promised, the reader is able to perform introductory data science on approachable datasets.

This is a nicely written book for beginners who want to learn about data science. When I say beginners I mean a smart high school upperclassman. The writing is not mathematically challenging and the examples are easy to follow. That said, the content left me scratching my head. The problem was not that the writing was bad or the topics were hard but rather I don't know why the authors included it. For example, early on the authors talk about binary representation. That is sorta-kinda useful but not as a core feature for a data scientist. Other oddities include the coverage of the central limit theorem and law of large numbers. I teach university level data science and biostatistics and I thought the explanation was nicely done but again I found myself thinking why are they taking the space to cover this as the core part of a book on data science. There are many interesting chapters (like the coverage of database connections and shiny) but so much of the material is barely an appetizer not even a light snack. While it is good to make beginners aware of things that can be done, the reader is only able to break the surface of some very deep waters.The code is not bad but it could be better. The typesetting on the code blocks could use work. The large font makes it easy to read but the way it wraps makes it rough to study and it causes it to not really conform to the popular R styles (like Google's). The choice of R packages is okay but it could be better. In particular, *many* data scientists work extensively with the tidyverse packages and they do data manipulation using dplyr. While bits of the tidyverse are presented it does not get enough attention and the lack of dplyr support is a very bad oversight. Basically the code looks closer to 2014/2015 then 2017/2018.If you are a reader starting from zero then this is not a bad buy but if you have any data manipulation experience start with R for Data Science: Import, Tidy, Transform, Visualize, and Model Data. It is superb and free on the web.

I've read four Data Science books this year, and this is my favorite so far. I particularly enjoy that each chapter starts with a brief philosophical lesson, story and then ties them together thematically with the lesson (Saltz may have invented the Harold of technical writing).R is a bit of a mixed bag. If you're not a programmer, you'll probably love it. If you are, well my internal dialog went something like, "@*#(&*$KHUSDFKJ@!!!! Another 'language' to learn!" Luckily, R is more of an overgrown statistical package than an actual language.This book is short, precise and to the point, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

This is definitely an intro book - it's not poorly written but also not the best on the subject.It uses R, which is an open-source, free statistical software - which is great - but R has some nuances that can be difficult to pick up, and those are not really covered here. As a practicing erstwhile data scientist, it's really hard to leave out statistics from the work (without fully understanding the data, the biases in the data collection and reporting, what's missing and what's an outlier: valid or not?) people can make some really misleading and wrong conclusions while exploring data in the name of "data science." So it would be good for some practical tips of how to approach new datasets for exploration, recognizing that not all datasets are going to be cleaned and curated for the data scientist. Having recently mentored a student who didn't know how to recode variables, that's a key component that should also be covered. It would improve also by following some of the O'Reilly format approaches for presenting code in a textbook.So expect to dip toes into the water but this book is very solidly in the shallow end of data understanding, exploration, and data science.

So, yes, I read the whole book. 600+ pages of both the first & second book. Read the 2nd one in about a week. I couldn't put it down. Both were very depressing and the second made me want to scream and shake Julia by the shoulders. These were the longest books and the worst stories that I absolutely had to finish...and ordered the last in the series. (will start that one today) The books are really well written and suck you in. So even though the stories were awful and depressing and nothing good was ever happening...you could count on that as you read, I had to finish the whole book and couldn't put it down. Would I recommend the series? No. She has written so many better books. But, if you start reading it, you will read all of them. They are like driving by a car crash...you just can't help but look. Really makes me wonder about the author if these were her first novels. It really is disturbing and depressing material. Still love her writing style, just wish these would have been a little more uplifting instead of tragic.

the 2nd in the Wideacre trilogy. Daughter of brother/sister lovers has a love affair with her supposed cousin who is actually her brother from the same siblings in the first book. Siblings having sex with one another then have 2 children a boy and a girl who then have sex when they grow up.Horrid story.

I love Philippa Gregory and have read just about all she has written in historical fiction. I looked forward to the Wildacre trilogy - something I haven't read! I didn't think this could be worse than Wildacre (the the violence, S&M, and dark themes) well I was wrong. If rape, murder and senseless violence is what you are looking for - this is it! Nicely written. Slow paced. But the subject manner is not something I want to read about! Not for teens!

What a terrible book. After reading Wideacre I couldn't wait to read The Favoured Child and quickly bought it online. Such a waste of money, and even if I hadn't paid for it- what a waste of time! How does an author create such a strong character with such a great story then follow up with such a spineless, useless, lily-livered girl as her heroin?! I'm 70% through the book just because I keep hoping something will happen or things will get better but NOTHING happens and then when it does its so frustrating i can't stand it!! I wish I'd just left it at wideacre and never bought this stupid book. Don't read it, it's awful. I don't think I'll read anything from Phillipa Gregory ever again.

"Same song. Second verse. Could be better, but I think it's worse." That just about sums it up for me. I won't give anything away; you'll have to read it for yourself. I am a "rabid" fan of Phiilippa Gregory, but this novel left me with a taste in my mouth that wasn't pleasant. I think all three novels in the trilogy would probably make a great TV series or even a movie... Don't people ever learn.? Does history have to repeat its self? I was sick & kept hoping things would turn out different. The novel took up a lot of my evenings, so you could say, I was entertained. I can't say I wasn't warned, but like most people, I had to see for my self. Now it's your turn....

I'm a huge Philippa Gregory fan, but this is not one of her best. It's the second of a trilogy - the first being Wideacre (which I bought in paper form and loved). The main character, Julia Lacey, is set to inherit Wideacre along with her cousin, who we know from the first book, is also her brother. It's an interesting enough premise, but Julia is one of the weakest, wishy-washy characters of any book I've read. So many times through the reading of this book, I was ready to throw the book across the room in frustration. I kept reading only because I'm a die-hard Philippa Gregory devotee and I kept hoping (praying) the character would grow a set and get rid of her horrible brother/cousin. If anyone else had written this book, I would have abandoned it.In short, it was disappointing.

This book is definitely my favorite one of the trilogy. Although it ended up breaking my heart, it was the most fun and anxiously filled page turning novel of the three. Very well written, Gregory knows how to reel you in and make you feel everything for the characters, both the good and the bad.

The whole Meriden series of 3 books kept me up until all hours of the night reading. I bought this for my sister while she was visiting (she borrowed the other 2 from me) and watched her suffer through several 2 hour nights of sleep because she couldn’t put the books down. At times while reading this series, I had be “rewind” and re-read a section because I couldn’t believe what just happened. I’ve read most of Philipa Gregory’s books and this series is among my favorites. She really knows how to bring historical fiction to life.

This is a somewhat useful book written by a lawyer and probably most useful to other lawyers. It is poorly edited and includes a small amount of information made to look bigger than it is with wide margins, large spacing between the lines and a small font. I have spent many years on Wall Street and am almost used to reading the complexity that pervades all US securities law and regs, a complexity that pervades this book.Other crowdfunding books, such as Nathan Rose's "Equity Crowdfunding," will be alot more useful to most business owners who prefer plain English and want to understand the broad range of issues surrounding crowdfunding and executing a successful crowdfunding campaign.

Wow! An incredible amount of information in 150 (+/-) pages! Of course, the type is small...Of researched crowd funding all over the internet and NOTHING comes close to this. This is the resource anyone needs if they are serious about launching a successful crowdfunding project. Buy this book.And it's only fifteen bucks! Are you kidding me?

The essence of crowdfunding is an expert understanding of and compliance with the rules; Jillian Sidoti is the pro.

If you are going to pursue equity crowdfunding, you had better know what you are talking about. This book is the best starting point I've found for gaining the knowledge needed to scratch the surface of understanding this complex topic. Choosing the best equity crowdfunding portal and offering is incredibly confusing, you are going to need to understand the JOBS Act, as well as possible. I highly recommend reading this book.

I would like to thank Jillian for writing this book. I have attended one of the crowd funding classes given by Jillian, Mr. Trowbridge, and other staff. This book has been a fantastic refresher in helping me decide how I want to approach my crowd funding activities. Jillian's knowledge and experience in this highly specialized field has made it easy to understand the concepts and pitfalls of crowd funding. There is no doubt in my mind that I will be using her expert services when I'm ready to move forward in my crowd funding endeavors. Thank you Jillian for breaking the information down into understandable sections. Keep up the great work!

Being already familiar with Kickstarter as a crowdfunding platform, I learned alot about the differences for real estate investing. All the different rules and codes can seem a little confusing, but that is just the way laws are. But the book is handy because it breaks down each one to quickly digest. One of the best features is that she provides a road map with boxes and steps on what to do to become successful. Also there are some contacts she lists as resources that may prove to be helpful too.

Outstanding Book! Completely filled me in on all of the missing pieces and my perceptions of which regulation fits my businesses agenda. My only regret is that I hadn’t read it sooner!!

This is an awesome resource for anyone new to crowdfunding. Jillian's expertise in this field is undeniable and her book is practical and easy to navigate. Definitely a book to refer back to from one deal to the next.
