While Lindsey Bareham was helping Simon Hopkinson put together his best-selling book, "Roast Chicken and Other Stories", the two of them began to reminisce about hotel and restaurant dishes they had grown up with and always loved; those Cinderellas of the kitchen that we abandoned in our quest for the wilder shores of gastronomy. Classics such as Duck a l'Orange, Weiner Schnitzel, Moussaka, Garlic Mushrooms and, of course, Prawn Cocktail, have all been slung out like old lovers but when made with fine, fresh ingredients and prepared with care and a genuine love of good eating, these former favourites should grace the most discerning of tables. "The Prawn Cocktail Years" sets out to rehabilitate the food we once loved and found exciting. In so doing, the authors take us on a cook's tour of the legendary post-war hotels and gentlemen's clubs with their Mulligatawny and Shepherd's Pie, to the bistros of Swinging London where Pate Maison and sizzling Escargots excited the braver palate. Then there were the first Italian trattorias where Saltimbocca and Oranges in Caramel were the order of the day and the 'Continental' restaurants with their exotic offerings of Beef Stroganoff, Chicken Kiev and Rhum Baba. Recipes for all these old favourites have been brought back to life as well as those classics that were once described as the Great British Meal - Prawn Cocktail, Steak Garni with Chips and Black Forest Gateau. Cooked as they should be, this much derided and often ridiculed dinner is still something very special indeed. The prawn cocktail years are staging a comeback...

If you are boomer or before, you will love the recipes in this nostalgic cook book. Food you haven't thought of in years is detailed here in delicious recipes. Simon is meticulous in his authenticity when recreating the food of our youth. But he also makes sure it's yummy. The narrative makes this great reading. His respect for food that has been mocked helps to see the cliches in a new light. Really a great resource for a theme party but also wonderful for a good meal.

I have owned this book for some time and continue to refer back to it as it is not only a trip down memory lane but Simon does a more than credible effort at updating some old-school dishes from the past which at various times could only be considered appalling. I highly recommend the Prawn Cocktail recipe.Simon's writing style is engaging and humorous whilst presenting recipes that are pretty easy to achieve and best of all taste good!I have a relatively large collection of cook books (1400+) and this one is is in my top twenty books to read and refer back to often.Just one note it is focused on the British cooking scene and so if you are not particularly interested in this then this book may not be for you. Overall I have found Simon to be an entertaining writer who is accurate and witty, which is sometimes a difficult combination to achieve.Enjoy!!

While you can tell that Cho's a young writer-- she's got room to grow in terms of cleanly switching perspectives, in particular-- this is a brilliant book and one that I heartily recommend. I can't wait to see where Cho goes; she's on my must-read author list after this. This is in the currently-popular historical British fantasy genre, and has one *very* important distinction: it manages to face head-on the awful sexism and racism of the era, without ever letting it get in the way of the story's pacing, and uses it to build very rich and complex characters. The book's hero, in particular, is completely relatable, very sympathetic, and has entirely realistically complicated feelings about several of the important people in his life as well as about his own situation. (The heroine is delightful, but I've seen more strong-female-characters-taking-on-a-sexist-system lately than strong-Black-characters-taking-on-a-racist-system lately, and I would expect a more mature Cho to do a slightly better job in building her character up smoothly.)

Sorcerer to the Crown is an alternate history fantasy novel set in Regency England. Magic is running low in England, and many pin the blame on an easy target – Zacharias Wythe, the first ever Royal Sorcerer to be an African. Zacharias has to navigate political difficulties, a situation involving Malaysian witches, and find a way to return magic back to England. In this effort, he’s added by Prunella Gentleman, a mixed race women with prodigious magical abilities of her own. It is one of those rare books that manages to deal with such difficult themes as institutionalized oppression but remain an overall fun and charming read. The comparisons to Susana Clarke’s Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell are inevitable. Both are books about magicians and fairies in Regency era England. Both deal with returning magic to England. Both explore the ideas of who is allowed access to magic. While there are similarities between the two, I’d say that Sorcerer to the Crown is it’s own book. People who like Clarke’s book might like Cho’s, but people who hated Clarke’s book might love Cho’s, especially given the differences in tone and writing style. Sorcerer to the Crown is a much more accessible book that never takes itself too seriously. The result is delightful."I might go anywhere and do any magic I pleased if I were Peter, not Prunella."Society in Sorcerer to the Crown deems magic to be a fit career only for gentlemen. They ignore the lower class people who practice magic and expound upon the dangers of female magicians, whose bodies are “too frail” to hold the necessary magic. Both our protagonists are excluded from the qualification of “gentlemen” and face many struggles as a result.Your amoral ingenuity in the pursuit of your interest is perfectly shocking,” said Zacharias severely.“Yes, isn’t it?” said Prunella, pleased.Characterization was overall well done, but only Prunella really stole my heart. I love Prunella! She is smart and determined, a force to be reckoned with. While she cannot imagine living without her magic, Prunella does not at first see any point in studying it. She grew up at a school for gentlewitches, where young women are taught to repress their magical abilities. She’s seen the results of what happens to women with magic, and she thinks the only path to success in life for a woman is marriage. Especially for Prunella, a half-Indian girl stuck between classes, this seems her only chance.Prunella took to the ballrooms of London in the spirit of ruthless calculation of a general entering a battlefield. It surprises me just how quickly I read Sorcerer to the Crown. It’s a middling sized fantasy book, just under four hundred pages, and yet I read it in less than twenty four hours. It wasn’t so much the plot that drew me in but the characters and world that Cho had created. This is a truly excellent debut novel. Oh, and as a bonus, there’s dragons!I give Sorcerer to the Crown a strong recommendation, particularly for anyone who likes fantasy of manners, historical fiction, or diverse characters. However, Sorcerer to the Crown should really appeal to anyone looking for an engaging book that will make them smile.

I love it when a book that you haven’t heard a lot about completely surprises you. Zen Cho’s The Sorcerer to the Crown combines magic and historical fiction into a truly entertaining and enjoyable experience. Cho imagines a world where magic freely flows from Fairyland into our realm, but much like any kind of resource, those with power have found a way to regulate its use and keep it from others. In England, those gifted with magical abilities can join the Royal Society of Unnatural Philosophers, but only if they are wealthy enough and male. Magic in England has been on the decline for years and no one is sure why. The Sorcerer Royal is under assault in every direction, both literally and figuratively. Determined to discover the reason behind England’s decrease in magic, Zacharias Wythe’s quest for answers puts him in the path of Prunella Gentleman, a young lady with extraordinary magical ability and a secret that may save England from losing all its magic.Someone like Zacharias Wythe should never have been allowed to become Sorcerer Royal. Born to slaves, Zacharias’ skin color is enough for many to draw their conclusions about him. As a young boy, he was taken in by Sir Stephan Wythe, former Sorcerer Royal before his death. Zacharias has spent his life as an outsider, excelling at magic despite the skepticism from members of the Society. Despite what his detractors may think of him, Zacharias is a proficient sorcerer. Unlike his colleagues, he does not use his power or influence for any sort of personal gain, but is always thinking of how he can help England and her dwindling source of magic. He’s used to relying on himself and not expecting a lot of help from others. His feelings toward his benefactor and his role as Sorcerer Royal are complicated. There’s affection and gratefulness, but he has also suffered a great deal because of prejudice. I loved that this historical fantasy addressed issues of racism. Often times these books focus on white characters and we get an incomplete version of the time when slavery and colonialism played key roles in how the world operated.Prunella Gentleman is a character I immediately took to. She’s bright, cheeky, and isn’t one to back down. At Mrs. Daubeney’s School for Gentlewitches, Prunella has taken on many roles. Her father passed away when she was younger and she’s been under the care of Mrs. Daubeney. Mrs. Daubeney was familiar with Prunella’s father, who spent a considerable time in India where he met Prunella’s mother, but save for his name, Prunella knows nothing substantial about either of them. Many do not know what to make of the young lady, who’s brown skin and features speak of foreign origin, but who speaks as well as any English girl. In England, women are not allowed to practice magic, so instead they are taught to suppress their talents. Still, in a school full of magically-inclined young ladies a hex or two is known to be thrown. Unlike Zacharias, Prunella is prone to act before thinking. She is resourceful and strong-willed, but undeniably reckless. Magic has always been a part of who she is, but more than anything, she wishes for some sort of security in her life. In Zacharias, she finds an unlikely friend who understand the misgivings that come with being a part of a world that never wholly accepts you.Cho’s writing made me fall immediately into this world. I loved how Cho combined magic and politics, showing that power and prejudice can have a huge influence on people’s views of the world. Sorcerer to the Crown is full of complex characters that are easy to fall in love with, an intricate world that addresses both racism and sexism, and is surprisingly amusing on top of all of this.

Great source of information, been my garage bible while working on my ‘74 vette. Can’t go wrong with Haynes.

It has basic projects and repairs, which is a plus. On the down side it doesn't go into a lot of detail on on bigger repairs like radiator removal etc. Good to have but the actual service manual will be my next purchase. It just depends on what type of work you're comfortable doing on your own car.

Have these manuals for other vehicles. Always good to have in the shop

As Expected

It's useful but it often seems to lack the details I'm looking for, such as a diagram of the fuse box.

This purchase was an accident, I hit the buy button, not meaning to but since it was only $0.75 for I used book I figured why not. It is good for all of the basic repairs on an older corvette. It is a great tool for information if you are a corvette owner to add to your Assembly Manual or any other written reference since not one repair manual has everything or every view to repair your car something.

Just what I wanted

Informative like other Haynes books. Do not have dash pictures of a Corvette in their examples though, looks more like a Cadillac (thats why only 4 stars). Would be nice to see the dash pieces off so I can figure out where the pry points are. Otherwise, good book as usual.

The Book of Swords is an anthology of sixteen “sword and sorcery” (or maybe “epic”) fantasy short stories (novelettes, really) edited by Gardner Dozois. What is “sword and sorcery”? The genre that consists of stories with swords and magic and kingdoms set in an alternative-kind-of-medieval land. That’s pretty much all that the stories of this collection have in common. The book does a terrific job representing the wide variety of styles and types of tales that can be told in that genre. Some are funny. Some are sad. Most of them are violent. Some of the stories are written by hot new writers in the fantasy genre, others are written by seasoned veterans that have been around for decades.I’ll just cut to the chase – you should buy this book if any of the following applies to you:1) You liked previous books edited by Gardner Dozois and George RR Martin, books like Rogues, Dangerous Women, and Warriors. Even though Martin did not co-edit this anthology, it has the same style and is of equal (or greater) quality than those collections.2) You really freaking love fantasy literature and want as much good stuff as possible.3) You have read Lord of the Rings and Ice and Fire and would like to explore a wider variety of fantasy authors without shelling out big bucks.4) You couldn’t really get into the Lord of the Rings books because they seemed more like an exercise in language creation, and you couldn’t really get into A Song of Ice and Fire because the style was too “faux-Romantic” for your tastes. But you think you’d like stories about swords and dragons and quests and stuff if they were written in a more straight-forward fashion. You’d like to explore more fantasy authors but you don’t know where to start.5) You are a fan of any of the authors in the collection.6) You like complicated, conflicted anti-heroes. And vikings. If any of the above applies to you, you should buy this book. The stories do not share a common storyline or universe. They are all independent of one another, so you do not have to read them in any particular order. For those who might wish to buy this book because it contains a George RR Martin story, be warned that it is another one of Martin’s historical-type stories set in Westeros. If you are thinking of buying this book just to obtain more information of Westeros, don’t bother. Buy a World of Ice and Fire and wait for Fire and Blood. I don’t think very much new information is included that is not already present in World of Ice and Fire. Most of the negative reviews that I’ve seen on amazon or goodreads for the book are because people bought it solely for this Martin story and are disappointed by the lack of new stuff.

I am a great fan of Gardner Dozois (I subscribed to Azimov's for many years) and also of the early work of GRRM as well as of his Song of Ice and Fire (have read just about everything Martin has ever written); have also read all previous martin/dozois anthologies. This fantasy "sword and sorcery" collection contains a range of stories, so of course some will appeal to some people and others to other people, but by and large this "sword and sorcery" collection fell flat to me. Holland, Parker, Liu, and Cherryh wrote fairly good tales, so if you are a big fan of one of these authors you might want to look at this book. Martin's own short story was a weak, dry telling of past Westeros history. Where Martin excels is in making complex characters live and suffer and become real to the reader, but his recent short story work just seems to sound like dry history of an imaginary place. So don't buy this book if you are a Martin fan and want to read a marvelous and moving short story. You will not find it anywhere in this anthology. Maybe buy this book if you would like an introduction to other authors you might like? As it stands though, this collection seemed weak. Better to read Martin's 2 volume Dreamsongs, or the Fritz Lieber Gray Mouser series, or Le Guin's Earthsea books (or Tolkien's Middle Earth books if you missed them)

Anthologies are always like chocolate samplers: some you love, some are okay, and some you only eat if you're desperate. Really enjoyed a number of stories in this one, and it got me revisiting the other work of the authors. Overall, I'm glad I bought it.Unfortunate Post Script:Martin's contribution was disappointing; don't get your hopes up unless you like uninspired exposition.

The majority of the book is comprised of stories written by other authors, which is a huge bonus as the book it worth it merely for GRRM's contribution.

I give it 4/5 because it had stories I enjoyed and wanted more of and some I didn't care a lot about. But it served the intention I had for it which was finding authors whose writing style I enjoyed.

Not as good as the main ASOIAF stories, but if you like the series this is a great addition.

Most of the stories were well written and intreging (so), but one or two are a bit disorganized and hard to read.

Multiple stories.

This book was recommended by a close friend who is a professional theater actor. I'm not a theater actor, nor do I study it, I am a theater enthusiast. I would always prefer a play over a movie. Thus, consider this a layman's review. Jones had enlightened me over an aspect of theater, that I admit, I normally overlooked: the background and stage. Typically, I'm focused on the actors' performance and story unfolding, and pay very little mind to the setting. I mean I would reference it for context of the dialogue, but it carries more of an importance than I originally thought. He also discusses the importance of costuming. This I definitely paid attention in my focus of the actors. The stage setting, the background, the lighting--he discusses their conception and construction quite...poetically. I read the book twice simply because I loved the way he spoke, and to research the plays he cited and worked on. It is a brilliant text that engages one to think dramatically, to think how to be true to context, and enhance the beauty of scenes or moments in life that we typically take for granted. Most layman's may not realize it, but the stage actually transcends the mood of the scene, the actors are secondary to that effect. Anyone who desires to succeed in stage design would make an effort to read this book.

Bought this for an Intro to Design class, it is a good read. I wouldn't have bought it if not for school though. There are some fantastic quotes in this book that I have carried in my memory bank. I recommend this only for those with interests in theatre, but in particular those with a focus on design.

Worth about a million stars at least. Be warned; this is not an instructional text. Rather it is a great and inspiring observation of the (then current) state of the theatre, as well as descriptions of former great productions and the art/set designers, lighting designers and actors who made them that way. Super inspirational, this book will make you work harder.

This book attempts to define a philosophical approach to stage design, to describe the "why" that underscores the "how" of scenery, lighting, sound, costuming. It does not prescribe or describe practical application. The writing style is flowery and a bit to get over initially. Jones's ideas are interesting, if a few are a bit old-fashioned. However, everything old is new again, including theatre design, so the ideas that Jones presents about theatre design's purpose, meaning, and value are useful to consider. This is a book to reference when considering general design goals, or to glean beautifully worded phrases from for research or concept presentations that reveal and elevate the ART in the art of stage design.

Simply put, a must have for the library of anyone interested in theatrical design.Robert Edmund Jones was the father of the New American Stagecraft and has, as such, influenced all scenic and lighting designers who followed - even if they are not aware of it!As someone now entering his 20th year as a college prof, and around his 30th as a professional designer, I am constantly reinvigorated and enthused by the words of Jones. He reminds us of the importance of the arts in our society and why we do what we do.A rough paraphrase from the book - "Do we carry visions of poetry with us as we shout directions to electricians on ladders? Yes."

Even all these many years later the lessons in this book are valuable. REJ was a pioneer and a visionary and this book helps us to understand what he envisioned for the theatre and hopefully to help us to achieve some of his ideas. I have read this book many, many times and I never tire of it or the ideas. If only we could get to this state in American Theatre..... This is a must read for any student of theatre.

needed it for class, its an easy read and not dry

Pointless. The whole book is the author acting self important and saying things everyone knows as if they're big insights.

The book is spiral bound but is inside a binder. The plus side to this book is that both grandparents can write in it. The downside is that because both can write in it, there is not a ton of room for detail. This book might not be for everyone but I am still giving 5 stars because the questions are things I would never think to ask but would love to know, and the convenience of having both in one place.

I decided I wanted to give grandparent journals to the parents and in-laws for Christmas, and began reading the reviews for the many books. I have a rather comprehensive genealogy already done, so I wasn't too interested in getting the whole "family tree" aspect. Instead, I wanted insight into the person's childhood and adulthood, and perhaps some little personal nuggets that would really flesh them out for me, my kids, and generations to come.At Any rate, I still couldn't figure out which one I wanted (sometimes those "look inside" things are just useless, showing copyright pages and blank sheets!), and of course the local book stores don't have all of them. I decided the only way I could decide which was right was to buy them all, look at them, and return the ones I didn't like as well. So, I bought Grandmother Remembers a Written Heirloom for My Grandchild,A Grandparent's Legacy: Your Life Story in Your Own Words,A Grandparent's Book,The Grandmother Book: A Book About You for Your Grandchild,Grandparents Journal, and Memories for My Grandchild. I'm planning to review them all as I make my decision. Since there's really no meat to the description of this one, I'll try to fill you in.This book is hardcover with a spiral binding which makes it really easy to lay a page flat to write in the book. Chapters are tabbed like you might see in a recipe book. The chapters are "family history", "childhood memories", "family traditions", "family celebrations", "the next generation" and "the future". These tabbed pages are a heavier stock paper, and the back side of them has a pocket built in for sliding in papers, photos, or other flat items. The paper on the other pages is a nice weight, with a flat finish which would make it possible to write on it with any type of pen or pencil. The last 4 sides (2 pieces of paper) in each chapter is a totally blank piece of cardstock. I would assume they want you to do with it what you will; continue answers, stick on pix, or somesuch. One subtlety that didn't sink in before I ordered it is that this book is written for both the grandmother and grandfather, so each page is split in half. the question(s) is/are at the top, then there is a lined section for grandmother, then a lined section for grandfather. The font is not really script; more like an italics. This book skips the basics (full name, birth date, birth place, mother's age, etc) and jumps right into the meat of it. Most pages ask at least 2 questions, some as many as 4. At first this didn't thrill me, because it didn't look like there was room to really answer the questions. It has occurred to me since, though, that this might work to advantage, because not everyone can fill in the start-a-sentence-for-you style lines, but with this more open, free-flowing space, you can answer the questions that apply to you, and ignore the ones that weren't part of your life, without leaving obvious gaps and blank pages. This is different from some other books such as Grandmother Remembers a Written Heirloom for My Grandchild which starts the sentence for you ("Grandfather said he liked me because __________"). Purely a style preference. The questions are different and interesting, while still being broad enough that you don't have to worry that they are trying to reach for minutae in the dark recesses of someone's brain. For example, "What is your most vivid or magical memory of your wedding day?", "what do you remember about your birthdays?" and "what family traditions do you remember from your childhood?"I think this one is a definite contender, and you can't beat the price (really! Check it out on the other online book stores.).UPDATE: Amazon changed the price on this -- radically. I don't know if it's because one was purchased and brought it to their attention, or what, but it isn't as great a deal today. I would still recommend it, even at this price point, if you are okay with one book for both grandparents. I decided to buy this one for my inlaws, as they aren't as in to family history stuff, and I think I'd have a hard time getting them to each fill out a full book.

This one is great since you can do this one for all of your grandbabies. It asks questions about both grandparents and great grandparents. A great way to leave a "written" legacy for your grandbabies. Takes a bit of work and I/we are working on it over time, but even with the few pages we have completed so far, we are sure that our grandbabies will enjoy it years down the road (can't read yet :)

It's a little too prompted with not quite enough space for flexibility (and sometimes older folks write bigger). But it's really very well organized and lovely. Higher quality than I expected, frankly.

I purchased 4 of the "grandparents" books because even after going through all of the reviews, I couldn't decide on which to get. These are for my two young children to give to my parents and my in-laws. This one would work well if you have grandparent's where one of the two is more apt then the other to complete it as it has spaces for both to complete on the same pages (I am afraid my dad might fall into that category). We weren't as happy with the questions in this book as the others. The spiral notebook format and pockets in each chapter were great, that was a definate plus for this book. The following are the 4 I purchased:Grandparents' Memory Book: Did You Really Walk Five Miles to School?Memories for My GrandchildA Grandparent's Legacy: Your Life Story in Your Own WordsGrandparents JournalWe decided to keep the "Memories for My Grandchild" for both of or Mom's and my husbands grandma. It was between this and "A Grandparent's Legacy: Your Life Story in Your Own Words" which I also liked very well. Ultimately we decided on "Memories for My Grandchild" because I liked the organization better and the pocket in the back for storage is nice. The questions in both were great. And we kept "Grandparents' Memory Book: Did You Really Walk Five Miles to School? " for both of our Dads. The questions in "Grandparents' Memory Book: Did You Really Walk Five Miles to School? " were really both of our favorites, very original and things we wouldn't normally think to ask. It is a very casual, easy going book while still organized nicely into categories. It seemed to fit both of our Dads better. Also, it is a smaller book then the others which I think will be less intimidating for them to complete. Downside, this one doesn't have spirals, it is a regular book.

This book is spiral bound which makes it easy to fill in. There is space on each page for both grandparents to answer. The questions are fairly basic and span entire life including time with grandchildren. This journal is for grandparents that are going to take time and really get into documenting their life for future generations. Other journals such as Grandparents' Memory Book scratch the surface and are for the grandparent who may not take as much time to fill out in such detail.Overall, great gift and I'm excited to read it when it's complete.

After being sick for a couple of years, I realized I wanted to have something to give to my grandchildren to remember me. This was an excellent book to do that. I had so much fun answering the pages. It brought back many memories of my childhood. Our grandchildren live far away from us. This book could be passed down to the next generation. Now I am getting my husband to write in it also. Thank you for a wonderful book for memories!

The book is exactly what it says it is: a way to learn some cool, complicated hairstyles. Some of them seem simple and self-explanatory (and you can find videos on YouTube that teach you the same thing), yet I find myself enjoying the book much more than many videos. The pictures and diagrams allow you to see a break-down move by move, so you don't have to pour over videos, rewinding repeatedly. I don't think the book precludes or YouTube videos, or vice-versa, especially if you enjoy books! I page through it pretty regularly, getting inspiration, dreaming, and trying my hand at some of the more complicated designs. It think it compliments the videos well, and the diagrams, at least for me, are a lifesaver!Design-wise, the book is fun to look at, with nice pictures of the styles on different models and clean diagrams- all I wish is that it had been on a spiral binding so I could lie it flat while trying to do the more complicated styles! I'm always afraid that I may break the book, though the binding is holding up so well so far under pretty regular usage and being propped open with various things. As for the styles included, they have a range of skill levels. Some, like the Sansa, seem almost impossible to do on your own...and some, like Rey or Gamora, are simple and very wearable for the day-to-day. There are softer, more romantic looks too, if you don't fancy looking like a viking warrior (Lizzy Bennet and Eowyn come to mind as looks that could work for a Christmas party or wedding). The pictures are of real people, and done by the author, so you get to see them on actual hair of various types and lengths (though I would imagine that this book is best for people with hair at least shoulder-length); the images are realistic and honest, which I really appreciate, and the tips are practical and useful, especially for beginners. There is a strong sample of more unique braids and up-dos that can (and in my opinion, should) be added to any hairstyle arsenal. If you are a new hand at braiding, this book may not be for you; start with free YouTube videos (even the authors, silvousplaits!) before you shell out the cash, but if you enjoy braiding and/or appreciate physical books, I'd say to pick it up. You'll learn some tips, and be able to challenge yourself to expand your hair horizons. I have not regretted owning this book:)If only Shannon had included diagrams for Astrid's braid from the first How To Train Your Dragon...maybe next time!

Full of beautiful photos of completed styles and clear illustrations of step-by-step instructions, this book is great for folks that are just beginning to get into styling their own hair as well as those of us who've been doing styles like these for years. The behind-the-scenes tidbits, historical facts, and great hair tips are also a really fun addition. If you are into cosplay, long hair, or just want to try your hand at some badass braids, then pick this up. It's well worth it.

This book is a great continuation of the tutorials that Shannon has done in her YouTube channel! It has a wide variety of easy-to-follow picture tutorials, with styles ranging from very manageable to a beginner, to fun challenges for more experienced braiders.

This is a great book for those with long hair, but also for those who just love to study hairstyles. In fact, one aspect that makes this book unique is that Burns presents the historical context of the styles so we gain some insight into the why of the styles. The photos and illustrations are well-done and the instructions are easy to follow. I also appreciated the tip boxes scattered throughout. Highly recommend! Burns' YouTube channel is also a great resource, but it helps to have the book in hand.

This is billed as something for lovers of Geek culture, but I actually bought this book as inspiration for my 6 year old daughter's hair. She has no idea who any of these people are, but she loves to flip through and look at the pictures to choose what she wants me to replicate. For the ones from historical time periods, we have a tiny age-appropriate history lesson while I work. I love, love, love this book, the directions are clear and the pictures are beautiful and super helpful. I only wish it were longer!

I am so excited about this book! I love and take a lot of inspiration from Shannon's Youtube hair tutorials. There is a good introduction to tools and basic techniques. There is an introduction to each style that includes the actress/actor who inspired it and the history of the character.

I love this book so heckin much. I wear my new braid hairstyles to work and get SO many compliments. I grew out my hair for three years so I could learn new braids and braid hairstyles and the fact that this book incorporates anime, sci-fi, fantasy etc hair into their braiding is just AMAZING. All my interests are met. I love it! The instructions are super easy to follow. I'm a visual learner when it comes to braids and all the braids in this book have detailed illustrations accompanying the directions. This book rules!!!

I was super excited to get this book as I love hairstyles from the movies and I’m a wig stylist so I’m always looking for new books on styles. After receiving, I found that while it was fun to re-review the styles, there were few styles I felt were practical to translate to wigs and too theatrical to use on myself or my daughter. All and all I determined it would end up sitting on a bookshelf and there was not much I would reference from it. The step by step instructions were also line drawings which are ok to follow but I like photos of people better where you see an actual head of hair. I suppose my mind checks out on sketches. There’s nothing really wrong with the book, it just wasn’t the book for me.
