I haven't climbed Kilimanjaro but am prepping for a trip and am in the "read everything there is" mode of training.This book has a lot of info on the area, history, culture and goes into all the major ascents: marangu, macheme, lemosho, shira, rongai and umbwe; summits: normal, barafu, western breach; and even the descents. It breaks down the trek day by day with camp site descriptions.I also like how the guide doesn't try to sell you anything and all the data is pretty objective.It has lots of pictures and I feel like I know the trek pretty well. So far it has helped me vet out all the trekking companies by comparing their itineraries.The guide has detailed maps of all the routes and surrounding area.I also like how the cover is laminated and has stood up to being knocked around in the bottom of my backpack for a couple hikes.Update: I did summit Kilimanjaro in October of 2012 and this book really helped. I took two books with me: this one and Stedman. I took Rongai up and the descriptions and maps were very helpful. There's a bit of downtime, so I liked to read through what we would see the next day while we relaxed.

Pretty good explanation of what to expect during a climb of Kilimanjaro. I found this to be helpful in selecting a route and acquiring gear. Some of the information is out of date, namely regulatory status and guide service names. It did however describe the hotel in Moshi we resided in. This is good material and I recommend it for anyone planning a trek to Kili.

I love Cicerone guides and this one is so well written and formulated. Well worth the buy if planning a trip to Kilimanjaro. Very accurate with regards to Rongai Route which is the route I took. Nice read when stopping for a quick lunch or waiting for other trekkers to get out of their tents :)

I bought this book to read ahead about an upcoming Kilimanjaro trip. Honestly, it was so informative that I brought it with me on the climb. It was great reading it after supper about the upcoming days trek. Has great pictures to identify plants and such.After the climb, i borrowed it out to a few different people i met back at the hotel, so they studied it up for days getting ready for their upcoming climbs.Definitely recommend to anyone going!

I bought this for my daughter who is travelling to Africa to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro. We found this book to be very informative and a handy reference guide.

A very comprehensive and practical guide to Kilimanjaro. It made my maiden ascent very enjoyable. all topics well covered. Different climbing routes, summit routes and descent routes. an excellent section on altitude sickness.

This book is really a nice addition to my religious collection, it is over 1000 pages with 7 scholarly reviews and even the smallest error is notated for your reading. This book however makes all the difference in the world when reading the scriptures as it explains the life and times of the various books. I did not know Josephus was of the Levi Tribe and thus of the pharisees family lineage, but he is a historian so writes with concise brevity but very indepth for the reader, to understand the scriptures. Nothing like it I have ever owned or read. Has many interesting facts on how the Patriarch and Prophets as well as the Hebrews, babylonians, medo persian, greek and romans were over various times in history. Josephus is a contemporary of many of the disciples as I think he died in like 100-110 AD. I am so fascinated that I find myself reading small print in little chunks of 4-8 pages at a time as the print is small, but this is a huge book. If you needed bigger print you would have to go to several volumes. And they used quality paper. No place to take margin notes though. This has to be one of the very few times I have been fascinated enough to read a book this size and stay with it. I am better as a technical reader as I am a scientist, but this one is very very worth while to get. And would be a great gift for anyone who reads the scriptures.

It’s all here. With footnotes, as in the original English translation. Thin paper pages, but otherwise it couldn’t all fit in one volume. As readable as Josephus ever gets, at least technically. He’s a blathery writer, but this is early writing. It’s a very good reference for who was killing whom in first-century Judea.

Wow, what a book. The most respected historian in my estimation in history, Josephus has given such a recording of history that I believe more educators should actually look at and begin to teach. From creation to the wars this book gives you so much information that you must take your time to read. This isn't a book that one should sit down and skim through but actually give time to. I brought this book with me to work and during my lunch hour sat and read. It took me a while to finish but I learned so much from history.Keep in mind that this book is not a side by side with the Bible however many Bible Scholars also give credit to Josephus for his recording of many Biblical accounts.If you love history, and love to read this is a great book. You won't go wrong with this buy.

Only to Book 3 so far. Challenging to get the hang of the translation, but OK once you get used to the "old English".Major complaint: there are numerous numbered footnotes in each book with hyperlinks to take to you the notes and then return. Unfortunately, clicking on the links in Chap 2 & 3 for their notes, takes you to the notes for Chap 1 and then good luck getting back to where you were! I assume this problem is related to this Kindle version only.

It is very well written, and easy to understand.When the book arrived, my husband immediately started reading it...has not put it down...We are very happy to have chosen this book. Josephus The complete Works...It's very well translated. I would recommend this copy to any one who wants to understand the New Testament better.

The original source material for the Xian New Testament gospels. The church father Origen rooted out and burned copies of Josephus, because Josephus did not mention Jesus. The passage in Josephus that Xians use to "prove" Jesus existed is spurious and added by later Xian writers. The Church defended the passage for centuries, and now grudgingly admit that it may be a later insertion. If you read the surrounding material and the added passages in Greek, it is easy to see that they don't fit the text. If Jesus existed, what was his name? Jesus is a Greek name and not Aramaic, Jewish or other Semitic language name.

The footnotes and chapter links do not take me to the right locations. For scholarly massive work like this not being able to navigate is incredibly frustrating. Not worth 99 cents. Wish I could return it but can’t figure out how. Wasted afternoon trying to use this.

Great historical book. Full of history from the time of the Romans 2000 years ago, and talking about their interactions with Israel and the Roman conquest of Judea and the wars with a run and then the Jews and the fall of Jerusalem in 70 AD. Fascinating reading.

CHAPTER ONEBUT, YOU MAY say, we asked you to speak about women and fiction-what has that got to do with a room of one's own? I will try to explain. When you asked me to speak about women and fiction I sat down on the banks of a river and began to wonder what the words meant. They might mean simply a few remarks about Fanny Burney; a few more about Jane Austen; a tribute to the Brontës and a sketch of Haworth Parsonage under snow; some witticisms if possible about Miss Mitford; a respectful allusion to George Eliot; a reference to Mrs. Gaskell and one would have done. But at second sight the words seemed not so simple. The title women and fiction might mean, and you may have meant it to mean, women and what they are like; or it might mean women and the fiction that they write; or it might mean women and the fiction that is written about them; or it might mean that somehow all three are inextricably mixed together and you want me to consider them in that light. But when I began to consider the subject in this last way, which seemed the most interesting, I soon saw that it had one fatal drawback. I should never be able to come to a conclusion. I should never be able to fulfil what is, I understand, the first duty of a lecturer-to hand you after an hour's discourse a nugget of pure truth to wrap up between the pages of your notebooks and keep on the mantel-piece for ever. All I could do was to offer you an opinion upon one minor point-a woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction; and that, as you will see, leaves the great problem of the true nature of woman and the true nature of fiction unsolved. I have shirked the duty of coming to a conclusion upon these two questions-women and fiction remain, so far as I am concerned, unsolved problems. But in order to make some amends I am going to do what I can to show you how I arrived at this opinion about the room and the money. I am going to develop in your presence as fully and freely as I can the train of thought which led me to think this. Perhaps if I lay bare the ideas, the prejudices, that lie behind this statement you will find that they have some bearing upon women and some upon fiction. At any rate, when a subject is highly controversial-and any question about sex is that-one cannot hope to tell the truth. One can only show how one came to hold whatever opinion one does hold. One can only give one's audience the chance of drawing their own conclusions as they observe the limitations, the prejudices, the idiosyncrasies of the speaker. Fiction here is likely to contain more truth than fact. Therefore I propose, making use of all the liberties and licences of a novelist, to tell you the story of the two days that preceded my coming here-how, bowed down by the weight of the subject which you have laid upon my shoulders, I pondered it, and made it work in and out of my daily life. I need not say that what I am about to describe has no existence; Oxbridge is an invention; so is Fernham; "I" is only a convenient term for somebody who has no real being. Lies will flow from my lips, but there may perhaps be some truth mixed up with them; it is for you to seek out this truth and to decide whether any part of it is worth keeping. If not, you will of course throw the whole of it into the wastepaper basket and forget all about it. Here then was I (call me Mary Beton, Mary Seton, Mary Carmichael or by any name you please-it is not a matter of any importance) sitting on the banks of a river a week or two ago in fine October weather, lost in thought. That collar I have spoken of, women and fiction, the need of coming to some conclusion on a subject that raises all sorts of prejudices and passions, bowed my head to the ground. To the right and left bushes of some sort, golden and crimson, glowed with the colour, even it seemed burnt with the heat, of fire. On the further bank the willows wept in perpetual lamentation, their hair about their shoulders. The river reflected whatever it chose of sky and bridge and burning tree, and when the undergraduate had oared his boat through the reflections they closed again, completely, as if he had never been. There one might have sat the clock round lost in thought. Thought-to call it by a prouder name than it deserved-had let its line down into the stream. It swayed, minute after minute, hither and thither among the reflections and the weeds, letting the water lift it and sink it, until-you know the little tug-the sudden conglomeration of an idea at the end of one's line: and then the cautious hauling of it in, and the careful laying of it out? Alas, laid on the grass how small, how insignificant this thought of mine looked; the sort of fish that a good fisherman puts back into the water so that it may grow fatter and be one day worth cooking and eating. I will not trouble you with that thought now, though if you look carefully you may find it for yourselves in the course of what I am going to say. But however small it was, it had, nevertheless, the mysterious property of its kind-put back into the mind, it became at once very exciting, and important; and as it darted and sank, and flashed hither and thither, set up such a wash and tumult of ideas that it was impossible to sit still. It was thus that I found myself walking with extreme rapidity across a grass plot. Instantly a man's figure rose to intercept me. Nor did I at first understand that the gesticulations of a curious-looking object, in a cut-away coat and evening shirt, were aimed at me. His face expressed horror and indignation. Instinct rather than reason came to my help; he was a Beadle; I was a woman. This was the turf; there was the path. Only the Fellows and Scholars are allowed here; the gravel is the place for me. Such thoughts were the work of a moment. As I regained the path the arms of the Beadle sank, his face assumed its usual repose, and though turf is better walking than gravel, no very great harm was done. The only charge I could bring against the Fellows and Scholars of whatever the college might happen to be was that in protection of their turf, which has been rolled for 300 years in succession, they had sent my little fish into hiding. What idea it had been that had sent me so audaciously trespassing I could not now remember. The spirit of peace descended like a cloud from heaven, for if the spirit of peace dwells anywhere, it is in the courts and quadrangles of Oxbridge on a fine October morning. Strolling through those colleges past those ancient halls the roughness of the present seemed smoothed away; the body seemed contained in a miraculous glass cabinet through which no sound could penetrate, and the mind, freed from any contact with facts (unless one trespassed on the turf again), was at liberty to settle down upon whatever meditation was in harmony with the moment. As chance would have it, some stray memory of some old essay about revisiting Oxbridge in the long vacation brought Charles Lamb to mind-Saint Charles, said Thackeray, putting a letter of Lamb's to his forehead. Indeed, among all the dead (I give you my thoughts as they came to me), Lamb is one of the most congenial; one to whom one would have liked to say, Tell me then how you wrote your essays? For his essays are superior even to Max Beerbohm's, I thought, with all their perfection, because of that wild flash of imagination, that lightning crack of genius in the middle of them which leaves them flawed and imperfect, but starred with poetry. Lamb then came to Oxbridge perhaps a hundred years ago. Certainly he wrote an essay-the name escapes me- about the manuscript of one of Milton's poems which he saw here. It was Lycidas perhaps, and Lamb wrote how it shocked him to think it possible that any word in Lycidas could have been different from what it is. To think of Milton changing the words in that poem seemed to him a sort of sacrilege. This led me to remember what I could of Lycidas and to amuse myself with guessing which word it could have been that Milton had altered, and why. It then occurred to me that the very manuscript itself which Lamb had looked at was only a few hundred yards away, so that one could follow Lamb's footsteps across the quadrangle to that famous library where the treasure is kept. Moreover, I recollected, as I put this plan into execution, it is in this famous library that the manuscript of Thackeray's Esmond is also preserved. The critics often say that Esmond is Thackeray's most perfect novel. But the affectation of the style, with its imitation of the eighteenth century, hampers one, so far as I can remember; unless indeed the eighteenth-century style was natural to Thackeray-a fact that one might prove by looking at the manuscript and seeing whether the alterations were for the benefit of the style or of the sense. But then one would have to decide what is style and what is meaning, a question which-but here I was actually at the door which leads into the library itself. Rating is for copy, not Woolf's story. This is not a real book. This copy is retyped in small font with reduced line space and smashed together. Chapter after chapter appears right after another without even a line break, let alone a page break. Impossible to read for relaxation. Makes your eye hurt.

An essay written in the late 1920s about women's writing. Why wasn't Shakespeare a woman? Why did Jane Austen hide her manuscripts from guests? What makes good writing? What makes women's writing? Are a woman's sentences different from a man's sentences?This book is witty, from the first moment when the author tries to cross the lawn of an Oxbridge college and is stopped by a beadle because only the fellows and scholars (all male) are allowed here. Later she notes wryly that the few women's colleges have no such beadle, and none of the endowments of the men's colleges.What a woman needs in order to write is a room of one's own and five hundred pounds a year.When she wrote, women had only had the vote in Britain for less than a decade, and married women had only been allowed to own their own property for a bare forty years. Women's education is no longer the issue it was when the book was written and it is much easier today for a woman to be independent. Still, A Room of One's Own remains an entertaining read and the issues it raises are by no means resolved.

100 years later, she still inspires great insights into the common heritage of women. In eloquent, often poetic language, mrs Woolf makes us see the world through the eyes of Shakespeare's sister. She makes us see how women's toil has barred women from participating in the learned world. We shall not excuse ourselves for producing our offspring, but with modernity comes the responsibility to seize the opportunity to be educated, writing, productive citizens in more than one way. We shall not let ourselves be ignored or set aside, because our experiences are no less important than those of men. And our experience is the source of a different writing than that of men. Thank you for making me proud of my gender.

The almost flippant tone with which Wolff skewers male artistic superiority with arguments while simultaneously refuting the same idea with a style itself ingenious etches in one’s soul the plight of women in the early twentieth century.And, of course, the book is almost a victim of its own success. Few women in Western countries are now dissuaded from having an artistic career. The women’s movement has, so to speak, moved on to demands like equal pay.So I’ll merely point out one perspective which may have been overlooked by some readers. That is, that Woolf’s cause is completely centered around the problems of first world women. Basically, Woolf argues that women do not have the access to the wealth or education that men have and, as a result, have not produced an artistic genius like Shakespeare. Fair enough. But how many women in the period following the First World War were concerned about having an outlet for their creativity? Were not women in many parts of the world so bereft of even their natural human rights so as not to over worry about outlets for creativity?For all its indisputable genius, A Room of One’s Own then may arguably be charged with a mixed legacy. Yes, it highlighted the need for privileged women to be equals of men in their access to the fonts of creativity. But it also may have tended to direct feminism to a first world perspective leaving out the voices of billions of women who Woolf, for all her literary aplomb, does not seem overly concerned about, at least in this work.Literary classic? Undoubtedly. Mixed effect on the direction of twentieth century feminism? A distinct possibility.

I always forget how great Virginia Woolf's writing is. This is an essay noting the absence of women's writing voices throughout history and she makes note that women need a room of their own (which throughout history they have not had being forced to write in common rooms when they wrote) and independent means (which until very recent history women's income was claimed by their husband). Her point being that women need independence if they are to have an independent writing voice.

One of the best books I read in 2016.She should be one of the most humorous women in Britain at her time. It was supposed to be a speech. Putting a lot of discursive aside, her speech started with Women and Fiction and what she had experienced and what had inspired her about the topic she supposedly gave speech to Newham Girls College. Here main theme, "numerous generations of unsung unnoticed unjusted women paved the way for what women at her era could attain was remarkable, and the girls should fight and stand on their corpses' and souls' behalf", was so strong and so well versed.

This is the first I have ever read of Virginia Woolf. I found it a fascinating read. I came away learning new things and realizing women have felt inferior for a very long time. I hadn't realized this book is one of the beginnings of the feminist movement.

This book is not only an enjoyable and fairly quick read, but it is also an important milestone in not only feminist literature, but literature as a whole. Woolf's amusing and sharp assessments of the way men view women to be inferior, particularly in skill and intellegence, is (at least somewhat) relevent even today. She rightfully stresses the importance of every woman having both a room and money of her own. Without those two things, she can not be truely independant. A must for any lover of feminism or for anyone with a taste for short, smart books.
