A fascinating story of deception, identity theft, and vagaries of memory.The time is 16th century. Place: Artigat; a small village in Languedoc, just south of modern-day Toulouse. Martin Guerre is the son of a peasant family who migrated to France from Spain's Basque region. Martin marries Bertrande. But after having a child, 24-year old Martin first steals grain from his own father (a vile act with serious consequences back then) and then runs away from his village for a life of adventure in Spain. His place is soon taken by Arnaud du Tilh, an audacious liar from nearby Sajas, who shows up at Artigat claiming he's the long-gone Martin Guerre.This is of course a story that cannot take place in the era of Facebook and Internet databases. But back then no villager has any photos taken or paintings made. No one actually has a firm description of the original Martin. Even though he is not as tall and thin as the Martin the Original, Martin's four sisters testify that the stocky Arnaud is indeed their lost brother. Go figure.That may be hard to believe but what to make of Bertrande who accepts the fake Martin as her real husband and admits him to her bed to give birth to his children? Can a woman's memory get that frail within such a short period of time? Or did she talk herself into that relationship thinking she can back out of it anytime she wanted by claiming she was deceived? We'll never know.What we know for sure is, Bertrande and the Fake Martin build for themselves a stable and almost exemplary marriage which lasts three years. The honeymoon ends when hubris rears its ugly head. The Fake Martin feels so confident in his new skin that he tries to sue Pierre Guerre (Martin's uncle) over property rights and inheritance. That's when Pierre, who is already suspicious of the Fake Martin's identity, sues Arnaud for identity and property theft, which can be punished by death.At the trial, the Fake Martin defends himself with remarkable vigor thanks to his prodigious memory. He quotes so many correct details about his past relationship with the Artigat residents that some judges start to think he might be the real Martin Guerre. That's when the real Martin, who has lost a leg in a battle while serving the Spanish King, shows up at the doorsteps of the courthouse in Toulouse and declares himself.At the end, Arnaud cannot maintain the facade to the bitter end and is forced to get down on his knees and admit his crime. After a public hanging, his body is burned to erase his memory for eternity.What's fascinating to me is the seriousness with which a 16th century French court approached the lawsuit. The judges listened to hundreds of witnesses and tried every method they could think of to trip the Fake Martin and force him to reveal himself. If you're one of those who think that modern monogamy is an invention of the Victorian era, it's instructive to read that in 16th century France, the punishment for adultery was death. The mad courage of an impostor to take on a whole village and the mental energy he brings to the job at hand at the risk of death is nothing short of fascinating. No wonder the story was made into a movie, starring the lantern-jawed Gerard Depardieu.As I was reading this story I was amazed at the professional discipline with which the lawyers and judges of the time have handled this case. Reputations were on the line since the French judges were already an autonomous body of professionals back then with careers to build and images to protect. They were in competition with one another for glory and cash. That much is certain. But they were also struggling with the technical details such as interrogating the suspects, recording testimonies, deciding on how to use one testimony against another, sifting out motivations and contributing factors, thinking and weighing all the different possibilities, etc., all the while trying to stay within the bounds of the law. The author lifts the dusty covers of an opaque past and treats us to an illuminating look at what perhaps Max Weber would've called the "bureaucratization" of the judiciary process.Another reason why I was enamored by this book is the way it portrays in rich detail the unnerving frailty of human memory; the way our memories are bent out of shape for a long list of reasons. Memory is identity. If we can't trust our memories, how can we trust our identities? How can we trust a court testimony or a simple recollection when not one, not two, but FOUR sisters bear false testimony about the way their very own brother looked, walked, and spoke? Can such a thing happen in our own society today? I hesitate to say "no".A great and easy read. A page turner and a thriller that you can finish in a single day. Highly recommended.

The story of Martin Guerre is a conundrum that's inexplicable. How could a husband and wife not know each other? How could an imposter who did not have a Basque accent fool his in-laws and the rest of the village? Davis does an interesting but only okay job with the evidence, projecting onto the motivations of Ms. Guerre without any evidence very modern values that just don't seem plausible for her society.

This is not a new work. Far from it. It is an infinitely beautiful work, and beautiful book. However do not confuse the beauty of the work, the research, the import with the underlying cruelty and harshness of this every day life. Alas, some things never change.

I enjoyed reading it. Very clever situation. Watched the movie as well. Slightly different, of course. I liked the book better.

Turns out Martin is impotent, and the family believes he is under a spell. After years of marriage with no offspring, Martin is miraculously cured and he and Bertrande have a child. Shortly thereafter, Martin steals from his father and flees the village.And then no one sees hide nor hair of Martin for eight years. Bertrande refuses to take another man and lives with Martin's uncle, who has married her mother. The whole village is surprised when, after eight years, Martin returns--shorter, stockier, lighter-skinned and with smaller feet. But he knows everything that Martin should and so the people welcome him home and Bertrande returns to married life with "the new Martin."More years pass and, when Martin tries to retake control of his family's finances, his uncle takes him to trial as an imposter. The rest of the book is a dramatic court case. Is this the real Martin? Why does he look so different, and if he's an impostor, how did he know what he did when he showed up? Why hasn't anyone questioned him before? The courtroom drama builds in tension like the most modern of thrillers, and the dramatic showdown between "Martin" and a late arrival to the case is shocking.That's what I loved about the book--Davis knows how to tell a story, and tell it well. And the book is short, easily read within a few hours (if you're a slow reader, like myself) or 45 minutes (like some of my friends).Unfortunately, I have to disagree with most of the conclusions Davis draws from the story. She clearly views Bertrande as some kind of proto-feminist hero, "self-fashioning" her own life, collaborating with a liar against her family by choosing to take in a man she knew to be an impostor. But none of the evidence Davis examines back up her conclusions. The judge whose book she uses as a source believed Bertrande totally innocent of complicity with the impostor, as did everyone else back then. And while it was interesting to view the events of Martin Guerre's life against the backdrop of the Protestant Reformation, then taking Europe by storm, it's quite a stretch to break the imposture case down along those lines.The flaws of Davis's book are not unique--they're common to all "microhistory," histories that try to build on tiny events that, by their very nature, often lack detailed, complete evidence, and often important evidence at that. But in the end, Davis's book is so well-written and enjoyable I'm willing to forgive it its faults and enjoy it for what it is--a rousing medieval tale with a healthy dose of speculation.Recommended.

Although I enjoyed reading this book and I did learn quite a bit, by the end, I wondered if Paul Strathern loathed the entire Medici Family and the City of Florence in general. Additionally, he seemed to spend an unnecessary amount of time pointing out various individuals’ sexual proclivities and/or perversions. And his unsubstantiated opinions on certain artist’s homosexual leanings differ from many well respected art historians.If you want to learn about Florence, don’t make this your only book. The picture he paints is one tiny ugly slice of an otherwise magnificent people and city.

The text is straight forward. The narrative flows nicely. The information is informative and often witty. No doubt professional historians may be appalled by its style. For history buffs who know little or nothing about this important family of giants and midgets, givers and takers, saints and sinners, etc, this is an excellent read.

This family may be the most responsible for what has become known as the Renaissance. Not only were they patrons of the great masters of the time, some even lived in their family home. Wonderful prose makes this an extremely enjoyable read. Very hard to put down. Left me wanting to learn more about this exciting time in history.

This is a highly readable book about the history of the Medici family beginning with founding father Cosimo through the last Medici Gian Gastone.

Good introduction. Fair Italian map. Rather good Florence map. Good index. Well-constructed but very cheap paper. One very annoying point: the font size changed throughout the book, very often changing on the same pages from paragraph to paragraph. Found the last 100 pages, slow, plodding and rather uninteresting.

Have read much on the deMedici family. Learning some new info here. Enjoying the writing style very much. The Audible voice is very pleasing.

In my opinion, the Medici were one of the most interesting families of history. Banking and trading, arts and science patronage throughout the Renaissance, Vatican politics... they did it all. This book not only tells this story of the Medici, but zooms out enough to give you a sense of the world at the time so that you can better understand how they so profoundly affected it. The author has a great writing style, too. It’s intelligent, but also sports a novelist’s flare that pulls you along with its imagery and frequent wit.

I bought this for my grandma to read and she likes it but it is incredibly heavy. I would say that it is an advanced read. The facts are awesome and you got lots of information. It is incredibly well researched.

He has some fresh ideas!

Diclaimer: I'm Turkish. English is my second language.After reading the first 50 pages my thought was that this book is not edited. I didn't know about the presidency thing and his awful opinion on not introducing further taxes on the wealthy. The first pages of book is full of hyperboles, boring unnnecesssary statements, vague opinions, run on sentences, I was confused.I am, however, a big fan of his initial memoir, "Pour Your Heart Into It". Things seemed much more sincere there and the tone is much more fresh and relatable. I wish this book took that flag and carried into deeper into sincerity and honesty. Instead it seems like one big pep talk.

Great story, nicely told

its a good book. I see Liberals are trying to throw the ratings off because they are mad he is running and they "think" this is why they will lose again in 2020. Throw all the left right out...what he says makes sense.

When my copy arrived on 1/30, I settled in and read the book from cover to cover. It's an interesting read. At times, intriguing. I haven't read any previous books by Howard Schultz and am not a Starbucks customer. There's a lot I didn't know about this former CEO or his company."From The Ground Up: A Journey to Reimagine the Promise of America" combines the story of his life from childhood on, a revolutionary business model that grew and expanded as Starbucks became a household name across the globe, and the value Schultz placed on his employees (aka partners), their dreams/goals and the communities they serve. The author's passion for creating opportunities is clear throughout all 335 pages. I was struck by his transparency and--especially--his willingness to own mistakes made along the way. A trait that's increasingly rare. There were areas that seemed to "bunny trail", yet I found the bulk of the book compelling. Thought-provoking. I don't agree with everything Schultz believes. I don't have to. It's a worthwhile read on it's own merits.

It would be very easy to slam this book as just a corporate “puff piece” attempting to make you feel warm and fuzzy about Starbucks, but there is much more here. I do think that readers should NOT consider the newly announced Presidential tease when judging the work and keep an open mind. I couldn’t give the book five stars, because there are some things in the book that seem a bit patronizing. The mea culpa on the departure of the SuperSonics basketball team from Seattle in the book was unnecessary. He decided to sell the team to stop losing money, we got it. It was GUILT that made him put that in the book. Also, he talks about great people who were hired to make the company more successful, but many times he does exactly the opposite from what they suggested. The book did bring a bit of a tear at times, being about the same age, we lived through the same events and I love how he captured those from his perspective. When someone noticed I was reading Schultz, they asked me what I thought of him (after reading the book), I said, Goody-two-shoes Billionaire, but I have to admit, it’s a great story and shows how often Howard tried to do the right thing. It’s easy to read and in the end, you will realize, it’s not the end of the story. It’s just a not so camouflaged resume for higher office.

It is inconceivable that Morin would defect, after all, a man in his position, has the opportunity to travel outside of Cuba frequently and thus, no reason to try to sail to the US in a rickety boat. The Count and his assistant Sergeant Manuel Palacios set out to interview the likely people who had last seen Rafael. Set in Havana, the story deals, cynically, with the corruption, control and massive disparities in wealth that make up the country. Conde works to find the truth about his comrade of old, (now a hero), who may not be all he appeared to be. The books cuts back and forth between Conde’s memories of high school and the present as he tries to figure out if the too-good-to-be-true Rafael Morin is really the upright comrade everyone says he is.The rich characterizations and bittersweet remembrances of the good old days, 20 years before, play as great a role in the book as the investigation of a missing man...a very important missing man. Havana and Cuban politics are effectively woven into the story, as part of the atmosphere. Our protagonist is a bit of a loner who has a pet fish. The fish is probably all he can handle relationship-wise.Padura uses the elements of a police procedural to criticize the political and social structures of the society in which the action takes place. "Havana Blue," is the first of the Cuban author's "Four Seasons Quartet" set in Havana in 1989. ( the title is from the English edition). The 3 other books in the series are: "Havana Gold," "Havana Red," and "Havana Black." The translator, Peter Bush, does a remarkable job of bringing the flavors, sounds and people of Havana to life. In Padura’s quartet, the plot is of relatively minor importance, although it certainly kept my attention. The author uses the narrative to provide a portrait of Havana and its people under a totalitarian regime that only allows the most basic forms of freedom. The rich characterizations and bittersweet remembrances of old times, 20 years ago, play as great a role in the book as the investigation. Havana and Cuban politics are effectively woven into the story, as part of the atmosphere.I found "Havana Blue" hard to put down. It would make a terrific beach read.JANA

I appreciate the author has certain special strictures in writing a detective story set in the country where he lives. At the time these were written, the 1990s. things were especially tough in Cuba during the collapse of the subsidies from the Soviet Union so no doubt the author had to be circumspect. The fact that this novel, the first of three, was written by a Cuban resident and not a Cuban exile gives it a certain sterility and dry quality one can imagine. It seems quite true to life for all I know about Cuba but the protagonists are cops so they enjoy a special place in the world across the water.Lots of talk and not much action disappoints this seeker after geographical description and knowledge of life in Cuba, the mysterious isle. I am not inclined to finish the trilogy.

The narrative has a choppy quality that threw me at first. But then I decided the staccato rhythm of the story might be symbolic - of the disconnect between youthful dreams and reality, between public image and private truth...Lieutenant Mario Conde admires Hemingway (as does Padura). And like his idol, Mario is not living a healthy lifestyle. At age thirty-four, with two divorces behind him, he drinks too much rum and smokes two packs a day. He doesn't shave properly and dresses sloppily.He's a very good detective. But he's just been handed a case he hates. A brilliantly successful party cadre has disappeared - and it's a man Mario knows and despises. Rafael Morin Rodriguez sprung from Mario's barrio to become a leader of Cuban industry. Rafael married Tamara, the girl Mario loved in high school and could never have. Maybe Mario is just envious. Certainly he's sick of hearing everyone sing Rafael's praises, as he goes on interviews seeking a clue to the disappearance.I liked the Cuban ambience in this book. People call each other "comrade." Mario's boss has a romantic attachment to Havana cigars, which he smokes slowly and with orgasmic pleasure. And there's lots of male camaraderie and macho fascination with baseball. The male characters are obsessed with women, but it doesn't go much deeper than the appreciation of anatomy. This is not to say Mario has no heart. His heart is very evident in his relationships with old school friends.Mario's repartee with his boss, subordinates and pals is lots of fun. And the investigation is engaging. Padura has a wry sense of humor that alleviates the gritty quality of the narrative.Havana Blue appeared in 1991, first book in the Havana Quartet. I enjoyed all these novels, and recommend the whole series.

This is Padura's second book in his series about The Count, an obstreperous Havana detective wrestling with life questions during the Castro era. Havana Red was meant to be shocking. Blue is more sly, probing the dirty little secrets of communism--graft, favoritism, social climbing--every society has issues with its 1%. Like all great detectives, The Count plays his hunches and wrestles them to the ground, but Padura transcends the genre with superb internal dialogue as the detective comes to grips with himself and his failings. Read Red first to understand the man, the place and the time, then devour Blue.

Excellent read.

I watched the series (Four Seasons in Havana) on Netflix, which were terrific and true to the books. I just read Havana Blue, which I enjoyed, but was a bit disappointed with the translation from Spanish to English.

Crime and human sadness are universal. This Cuban-noir story was rich with characters and a sense of sadness that crosses cultures. Just found this author and look forward to more.

While the translation was dotted with obvious errors I enjoyed reading this Cuban police procedural which takes place in the Communist era.
