i found this book very disappointing. At the very least, a full 25% of the book is devoted to the index. A large portion of the book provides only very general information such as soil structure, simple water delivery systems, fertilization, growing in raised beds, and California weather. If you live in So CA, you probably already know about June Gloom and the Santa Ana winds. I was hoping for a month to month guide of suggested planting, culture, specific tasks for each month, harvesting, etc. The only hint of this is a two page chart in the back of the book, the same ones I've gotten for free from Burpee ("Planting Guide for Southern CA") or Ferry Morse ("Planting Guide for Southwest"). An example from the month of October: "Continue to succession sow quick-maturing crops for a continuing harvest, but give heat-sensitive plants some afternoon shade and do not let them dry out" Duh. Not very specific. And word for word "Sow and Plant" paragraph from the month before.PROS:-about 25% of the book is devoted to the culture of specific crops, although presented entirely separate from the month to month guide.. This section has some potential, although it is anything but comprehensive. Is it possible that there is no mention of spinach at all? Not even in the two page planting guide. But there is a section on agretti, if that is on your list of must have crops...Additionally, nowhere are there suggested varieties that would perform well here in So CA.

Great for beginner gardeners.

Helpful and informative information for my growing region. Easy to use, tabs are a nice addition.

I took a chance on this one, since the title says it's for southern california, and I live in Tennessee. However, I quickly found out it is great information for any part of the country. This book is everything I've been wanting in a vegetable gardening book. I've needed one that tells me in simple terms what to do BY MONTH in order to get the most out of my garden. I'm one of those people who needs a lot of help, as I'm just getting started in raising my own food, and I was feeling overwhelmed by all the book choices, all the things to know to do and not do. For me, this is just the perfect, go-to book that lays things out simply, but with no shortage of information and help. The woman knows her stuff.. I feel sure this book will be dogeared and underlined into unrecognizable shape in a year or two. Get it. You won't be disappointed.

This is such a great reference! Gardening in Los Angeles is so idiosyncratic, we really need our own guide and I refer to mine constantly! Highly recommended!

Admittedly, I saw the title of this book and purchased it out of intrigue and skepticism.The author makes some good arguments about why some (maybe most) men are able to climb the career ladder. Without spoiling the book, I will say that I liked the emphasis on EQ, AI, and other methods that can be applied to select better leaders.The problems I had with the book are Chamorro-Premuzic's references to "science" studies and Freudian concepts. You'll see these pop up as you're reading, so be skeptical when the author make certain assertions as being concrete facts. Also, there are some over generalizations throughout.

This book is based on solid research (sorry, narcissists, I know you will not like the findings) and provides suggestions that can help organizations improve the quality of leadership. No, the solution in NOT just hiring and promoting more women - it is hiring and promoting competent, humble, teachable, and caring people. A must-read for any board, and all involved in hiring and promoting. Implementing these straightforward solutions will require discipline and commitment, but will result in stronger and better organizations.

Purchased after seeing the provocative title name; was not disappointed in the content of the book. The author challenges the traditional approach to leadership using SCIENCE and DATA. So refreshing. The chapters on confidence and charisma vs. competence are so timely and necessary. Everyone should read as we evaluate our 2020 presidential candidates. :)

The title caught my attention, particularly because it seemed to pander to things everyone already knows and is frustrated about. I wondered if that was all there was . Indeed. It is particularly troubling that books on leadership indulge themselves in cultivating contempt since the literature around what works in leadership would lead in the opposite direction. There do seem to be gender differences in the traits that contribute to effective leadership, and they do favor women, but they are not so sweeping as this author portrays. That all said, and particularly with so many abysmal male examples of inadequate leadership in the national and international news lately, I see why the book will likely sell well. Save your money for more substantial works, though, like Anderson and Adams newest title, Scaling Leadership. Their work is built on actionable research that covers the same ground, but without the obvious flaws.

According to Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic, "This book explores a central question: What if these two observations -- that most leaders are bad and that most leaders are male -- are causally linked? In other words, would the prevalence of bad leadership decrease if fewer men, and more women, were in charge?"As he later explains, "it's not just gender bias that holds competent women back from leadership and allows incompetent men to float to the top. It's a fundamental disconnect between actual leadership talent and our assumptions about it. There is a world of difference between the personality traits and behaviors it takes to be [begin italics] chosen [end italics] and the traits and skills you need to [begin italics] be able [end italics] to lead effectively."Chamorro-Premuzic wrote this book in order to identify the key qualities that cause people to become incompetent leaders -- and, conversely, good leaders. It is estimated that in 2018, U.S. companies spent about $20-BILLION on leadership development programs that involve earning business degrees, onsite classrooms and workshops, and self-directed instruction. The meager ROI is in large measure explained by what James O'Toole so aptly characterizes as "the ideology of comfort and the tyranny if custom." Sour old wine in new bottles still tastes like old wine.My take on all this is that the quality of an organization is best measured by the quality of its leaders. They must be carefully selected and then held accountable to much higher standards. I wholly agree with Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic: "Putting more women in leadership roles [who then act like incompetent men] does not necessarily improve the quality of leadership, whereas putting more talented leaders into leadership roles will increase the representation of women."Â

The reason I requested this book is the title, a sort of click bait.It was an interesting read that gave a lot of food for thought.I like how the author handles one of the biggest issues in organization, the role of women, and I liked some of the boldest statement.Even if it doesn't supply any real solution it was an interesting read.Recommended!Many thanks to Harvard Business Review and Netgalley for this ARC

I had been introduced to another book by this author, "The Sovernity of God" which Ireally liked. This book, "Knowing God" turned out to be very meaningful to me.Packer speaks directly to the reader asking and answering questions in a verycommunicative style. This is a book I will re-read over and over, and I purchasedextras for friends.After I finished reading it I had an "Aha moment". I recalled writing a letter to mymuch older brother whose health was failing fast. We had never been close ashe had estranged himself from the entire family for his entire life. I wrote that Iwas sorry that we had not had a relationship, and that I was sorry that I had notknown him better.And THAT is the message at the center of this book.... that knowing God has toconsist of more than knowledge of His Word, scrliptual verses from the Bible andfollowing the Ten Commandments. To know God, I learned, is to have a real,vibrant and personal emotional relationship with Him; one that requires love,trust, obedience, discipline, forgiveness, guidance, respect, honor and glory!A real relationship.I also really like how Packer descri bes and explains what it means to "be achild of God", what it means to be adopted into God's family, to call HimFather and Jesus Christ brother.Whether you are a long-time follower or a new born-again Christian I thinkthis will be a valuable book that will expand your understanding andappreciation of how precious your relationship with God is.

Does the book, Knowing God, by James I. Packer, deserve the status it has received as being a "classic"?Absolutely!!! You will not for a moment regret reading Packer's reflections on the attributes of God, the work of Christ on the Cross, and the living of the Christian life. Though I have a few quibbles about Packer's criticism of the use of icons and images in worship, his digs at Keswick consecration and surrender teaching, and his skepticism over the Charismatic reliance on hearing God. My concerns are minor compared to the great worth of Packer's thoughts on God in his greatness, the Son in his finished work, and the Holy Spirit in his enabling power. Be ready to grow spiritually as Packer walks you into a deeper and more profound understanding of God's Word. *Knowing God* is a wonderfully written book about God himself-- someone we need to know personally and intimately. I can't believe that it took me twenty-five years to finally take the time to read it.

I bought this book disregarding what others have said about this book, and wanting to find about this book myself. I, now, agree with many, many others who claim this book has changed their lives. I don't think I have ever read a book that just made me stop in the middle of the page and just sob and pray to God.Being a Christian my whole life and attending Bible studies and summer camps, I have been just knowing about God rather than knowing God. But Packer successfully helped me to know God by revealing how glorious and majestic He is and how He sent His son to die for me in order for me to be adopted into His family. I think my favorite part of this book was his first section (I know the Lord; chapter 1-6), The Majesty of God (chapter 8), God only Wise (Chapter 9), God's Wisdom and Ours (Chapter 10), God the Judge (Chapter 14), The Wrath of God (Chapter 15), Goodness and Severity (Chapter 16), and the last section (If God be for us; chapter 18-22).I would highly recommend this book to any Christian as Packer unfolds the characters of God but, not only that, he helps you wanting to know God more than when you picked up his book.

I agree with R. C. Sproul: “Few writings deserve to be called 'Christian classics' but this is surely one of them. With the heart of a pastor, the understanding of a theologian and the passion of a prophet, J. I. Packer brings the reader face to face with the living God.”

In my opinion the best book I've read other than the Bible. It will really enrich your life in the most essential ways--the ways that matter because they are eternal but affect everyday life. If you can drop your defenses and shift your trust completely to Christ, you will be rewarded in profound ways that Packer covers amazingly in this book.

I benefited greatly in Packer's presentation of the attributes of God and his presentation of my need to have my own sin dealt with through the Gospel. I found his characterization of God's holiness, mercy, and grace to be balanced and not skewed to make God somehow more palatable. When leading a group through this book, I was surprised at how many people took issue with some of Packer's assertions related to various topics. (for instance the chapter on the second commandment about not making an idol) . . . what I found to be invariably true is that when people took issue, it was because they had created an image of God that was not in alignment with the biblical presentation being made by Packer - and that in the majority of these cases when people re-examined their imagined god, they found him to fall short of the God presented within this book and corrected their understanding of God through Packer's gracious and instructional writing. Highly recommend.

This is a great discussion about God. It makes you think about aspects of Christianity you might not have paid attention to. And, then there are things that you need clarification about. Jack Nicklaus was supposed to have started each tour season retraining starting with the grip. He wanted to be sure he didn't pick up any bad habits. It is good to "relearn" about Christ periodically to be sure we haven't fallen into a misunderstanding. Rereading the Bible is paramount, but books like Knowing God are also great opportunities to recheck what we think we know.

It took me 20 years after exiting the cult of Jehovah's Witnesses (JW.org) to finally get the courage to sit down and read Crisis Of Conscience. I truly think I have been in denial for 20 years, and could not handle how deeply I had been lied to since birth. Reading Crisis Of Conscience was indeed life changing. The depths that the Governing Body sunk to, the blatant lies, the manipulation, and extorting our loyalty was criminal in my legal opinion. (After exiting the JW cult I was determined to reclaim what the Governing Body had stolen from me - a college education! I studied law and achieved a legal degree while in my 40's.) I think this is why it took me 20 years to build up the fortitude to really examine how morally repugnant the Watchtower was, and is to this day. Part of me still wanted to exist on Cloud 9 and believe that the GB was sincere and just misguided. Crisis Of Conscience by Ray Franz completely obliterated whatever shred of faith I had in this group's humanity and morality. While professing to be an organization free of injustice the GB has not just sat on the sidelines to social & civil injustice, they have actively participated in some of the most cruel crimes on members of their OWN "flock!" Perhaps after reading this blood chilling account of fraud and deception of the worst nature perpetrated on unsuspecting victims it causes one to pause and hope for these selfish, petty, power hungry men to come face to face with a reckoning for their horrific actions.

Absolutely amazing book. A must read for anyone considering leaving the Jehovah's Witnesses cult. Ray speaks out of care and concern, never out of anger. This book changed my life forever.

I now have copies of 4 different editions of this worthy book, including a rare original first edition hardbound version.This is one of three most important books that document the long and troubled history of the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society and its followers known as Jehovah's Witnesses. As a child and teenager growing up as a Jehovah's Witness, I only had vague suspicions and occasional hints that something was wrong with the "new religion" my parents had been talked into joining. My father was initially set against converting to the religion that my mother had chosen to accept, but soon was convinced that his Baptist upbringing was not in any way "true Christianity." So from the age of 8 to 22 I was an active Jehovah's Witness and figured that I would be one for the rest of my life. But then I met a young JW who had actually worked and served at the religion's headquarters in New York. He too had been totally dedicated to the religion, but then stumbled across the truth: In fact, it was all "smoke and mirrors" and the leadership was basically lying to Jehovah's Witnesses about almost everything. Years later I heard of Raymond Franz and his book. Franz was right in the middle of the mix and both he and his uncle were high ranking officers within the organization. If you have any connection or interest in Jehovah's Witnesses or have relatives or friends who are JWs, by all means get a hardcover or Kindle copy of this important (and now updated) book that simply tells the real truth about "the Truth" and how a religion has managed to mislead and ruin the lives of millions of followers. If you think Scientology and Mormons are controlling and misleading religions, then be prepared to learn of another religion that exists only to control its followers and to milk them for every dollar possible.l

Those curious about the history and inner workings of the Jehovah witnesses know research must include this book and I was one few who read the printed book from cover to cover. While the time and limited printing have slowly raised the prices to an uncomfortable level, the e-book version has once again made it available to those who want to - need to - know about the author’s experience with the hierarchy of the Jehovah’s Witness (JW).The e-book edition of Crisis of conscience (CoC) is a digital version text and images of the 4th edition with some minor additions that I have yet to distinguish from the original printed text. For those completely oblivious to the history, CoC is a memoir of the life Raymond Franz who was baptized into the JWs in 1938 and rose through the ranks to join the governing body in 1971. Intertwining his autobiography to the history of the JWs that would ultimately culminate in his disfellowshipping in 1981, he weaves together an incredible narrative of his growing personal crisis with the larger crisis of Jehovah witnesses as he begins to delve more into the research need to support the publishing arm that creates it’s “Awake!” and “Watchtower” magazines. Carefully researched, referenced, and documented with copies of articles, Mr. Franz discusses almost everything, and everything wrong, in detailed chapters like the founding of JWs, the development of is most provocative doctrines, the history of its date setting for the end of the world, and practice of shunning members.Of interest to most is the date setting. Perhaps taking up the majority of the book, the prophecies and aftermath to the 1975 date setting are elaborated in greatest detail but more so how 1914 and the supposed siege of Jerusalem in 607BC – it really happened in 586/587BC - became the linchpin to everything the JW teach. With the end constantly predicted for decades, many JWs planned their lives around the likelihood that planning for the future was pointless and disregarding plans to get higher educations, give up jobs, sell properties, and even start families as was the case with Franz, who would marry but not father children. When the end didn’t arrive, some followers were left destitute and question where they when wrong.At a little bit over than 600 pages, it is one of the longer books I enjoyed in sense of appreciating the effort and familiarity the author has with the subject. As I began to informally research differences between Christian sects and denominations, JWs always stood out for their stances on blood transfusions (they will not accept it), eschatology, and observance to holidays. While the author does no go into detail about holidays, except to discuss its contribution into religious freedom, the struggle the author discusses ranges from everything personal as JW's persecution in Malawi to the larger power struggle during the transition from C. T. Russell to J. F. Rutherford which led to the establishment of the JWs as we know them today.Like most other e-book presentations, it's very good. In addition to fitting in the form factor of whatever you read it on, navigation is comparable to any webpage with a table of content, notes, and bookmarks that takes instantly to any part of the book but there is one major caveat about the reading experience. Because the presentation has to accommodate both reproduced text and images (of copies of old articles and photos) the text is smaller usual and varying font sizes in images, you will have to adjust your settings constantly but whether you read it on an e-ink screen or tablet, the presentation is the same.
