"The New Yorker will be the magazine which is not edited for the old lady in Dubuque." This now-famous line first appeared in the prospectus Harold Ross wrote for a humor magazine he was hoping to start, and, in fact, epitomized the publication's early years. For, as contributing editor E.B. White once ruefully wrote in response to a query about what kind of submissions were wanted, "I myself have only the vaguest idea what sort of manuscripts The New Yorker wants. I have, however, a pretty clear idea of what it doesn't want." Plenty of books have been written about The New Yorker over the years--many by people who were intimately connected with it. Ben Yagoda's About Town is the first, however, to concentrate on the magazine itself, rather than the personalities who shaped it. In his introduction Yagoda writes: "What I had in mind was a critical and cultural history. It would consider, first, the content of the magazine--how its original form came to be, and how and why it evolved over the years. Second, I would look at the role the New Yorker has played in American cultural life." Yagoda is as good as his word as he takes readers from the founding of the magazine in 1919 up until 1987, the year William Shawn was forcibly retired from his position as editor in chief. An epilogue covers the Robert Gottlieb, Tina Brown, and David Remnick years, but the author considers that with Shawn's departure, the curtain came down on The New Yorker as "a unique and influential institution in our culture." Of course devotees of Harold Ross's brainchild could be expected to eat this book up, but About Town is more than just the story of how a magazine was made. Yagoda provides a window on a lost age--New York in the '20s, '30s, and '40s before the advent of television, when magazines and newspapers were at the center of the nation's cultural and intellectual life. He writes well, evoking the times, the people, and the places with such clarity that Harold Ross himself would have been pleased. And it is to Ross that Yagoda and the reader owe much of About Town, for it seems The New Yorker's founding editor kept meticulous records--as did those with whom he worked. When S.I. Newhouse took control of the magazine in 1985, its editorial files--all 2,500 archival boxes of them--ended up at the New York Public Library. Letters from editors to writers and vice versa, minutes from art meetings, memos, editorial queries, and marked-up manuscripts are the raw materials from which Yagoda shapes his story, and he tells it so well that it often reads like a novel. The section dealing with the magazine's decision to run John Hersey's Hiroshima in its entirety is positively gripping. But perhaps the best thing about About Town--for those readers who, like Alice in Wonderland, demand pictures and conversations in their stories--is the plethora of memorable quotes (and even a few photographs) that bring to life The New Yorker in its heyday. Consider this letter from Vladimir Nabokov concerning a short story the magazine had bought: A man called Ross started to "edit" it, and I wrote to Mrs. White telling her that I could not accept any of those ridiculous and exasperating alterations (odds and ends inserted in order to "link up" ideas and make them clear to the "average reader"). Nothing like it has ever happened to me in my life. Or this snippet from Ross's letter to H.L. Mencken: "We have carried editing to a very high degree of fussiness here, probably to a point approaching the ultimate. I don't know how to get it under control." Lovers of The New Yorker can thank their stars that Harold Ross never did get his fussiness under control. Yagoda begins in 1924, just before the New Yorker's start as a humor journal. Founder Harold Ross's stylistic conservatism, his meticulous editing and his ability to delegate authority helped build up the magazine, creating what Yagoda considers its Golden Age in the late 1930s. Long before David Remnick was a bright and talented schoolboy in River Vale, NJ the New Yorker and its leadership were setting the standard of what good writing should be. It turns out that he is a worthy successor to those editorial giants. H may very well surpass them.

There are two types of writers: those who aspire, no, dream of being published in the "New Yorker", and those who, after several rejections, bitterly deride the very institution they hoped to conquer. I am solidly of the first camp, though give it a few years and I might be a latter-day grouch.The work of Ben Yagoda brings the magazine alive, from the heyday of such luminaries as Thurber and White to the tough war years, right up through the Shawn era and even right up to (for 1999) the present. Through it all, Yagoda examines the many lives who devoted themselves to this literary exercise in humor and good faith. The most compelling character studies, however, are the two main editors throughout the magazine's history, Harold Ross and William Shawn.Ross, who founded the magazine in 1925 and managed it through its first twenty-six years, comes across as a gruff, thoroughly Western man who nonetheless saw the need for a magazine like "The New Yorker", and brought it to being through sheer will and fortitude. He also happened to publish significant works by James Thurber, E.B. White, and J.D. Salinger among others. Shawn, taking the reins after Ross's death in 1951, saw the magazine through 30+ years of challange and triumph, only to be forced out in 1987. Throughout the book, Yagoda makes these men the central focus of his tale, but he includes brief looks at literary and other lights of the twentieth century, some who did get published (like Donald Barthleme, Veronica Geng, and John Updike) and some who didn't (Tom Wolfe, whose scandelous expose on the magazine shook it out of its fuddiness).Overall, the book looks fondly back at the magazine's past, with a hint that it might never reach the same heights of importance it once had. That may very well be, but there's still something to be said for a magazine that is such an institution no one could imagine starting a writing career without considering the possibility of submitting to it."The New Yorker" is still the premier magazine in America, and this book explains why, after almost a century, it still carries the weight it does.

There are at least two ways to view Ben Yagoda's book ABOUT TOWN: 1) as the history of The New Yorker Magazine, how it was conceived and developed and changed over time, and 2) as a social document reflecting its times. The subtitle of the book "and the World it Made" does not seem quite as accurate unless one considers that "world" to be the corporate culture created by the staff led by Ross and Shawn, the two longtime editors who built the magazine. The New Yorker certainly has influenced the world within which it existed along with many other magazines.Harold Ross, the founder and first editor of the magazine, with the help of Katherine and E.B.White, Thurber, Dorothy Parker, and many other fine editors and writers launched the magazine in the 1920s. The sophisticated and literary focus of the magazine soon captured the fancy of New Yorkers. During the hard days of the depression the magazine actually gained subscribers as readers enjoyed the humorous repartee and cartoons that helped them laugh at their troubles. Many new readers learned of the magazine during WWII as it was handed around the barracks. The GI bill produced many educated readers who remembering their wartime contact with the magazine now subscibed to it. Following WWII, the magazine included more and more "social conscience" articles, for example, John Hershey's essay on "Hiroshima."Ross died in the early 1950s, and during the fifties under the editorship of William Shawn, the magazine became relatively banal according to Yagoda who says it appealed to stay-at-home wives who enjoyed articles that reminded them of their college days (among other pieces, Mary McCarthy's tales of her Italian travels were featured). In the 1960s, the magazine once again became more vocal about social issues and the environment.Yagoda says the best years of the magazine came in the 1970s when writers like Woody Allen wrote wonderful wacky pieces and investigative journalists covered the scandals inWashington. Following a downturn in subscriptions in 1980s, the magazine was purchased by a media mogul and William Shawn departed. With Tina Brown's arrival, the magazine metamorphed into a Conde Nast publication. Garrison Keillor's comments about Brown's arrival (as he left) are amusing.Over the years, I have read John Updike, Alice Munro, Jamaica Kincaid, Katherine White, and many of the writers who once wrote for the New Yorker. When I was a child, my mother used to quote Dorothy Parker regularly ("Rivers are damp..."), but I had no idea Parker wrote for The New Yorker until years later (we lived in a rural area and subscribed to the Progressive Farmer!!). When I read Rachel Carson's SILENT SPRING, it changed my life, but I read it in book form when it was first published as a Book of the Month Club selection. I only became aware of The New Yorker magazine when I was in my thirties and a college writing instructor suggested it. Yagoda says many people discovered the magazine when they were students.As a social document, The New Yorker articles very much reflect the times, and to some extent, at least under Ross, the magazine seemed to be ahead of the times. In reading this book, I was reminded of National Public Radio, which seems to be the main innovator in broadcast journalism these days--though I am told there are all sorts of happenings on the Internet. The in-depth news stories, the essays by various knowledgeable citizens, the political commentaries and Garrison Keilor are all comparable to The New Yorker magazine.If you are interested in a snapshot of the 20th Century from an educated New Yorker magazine perspective, or in writing and magazine development in general, you will find much of interest in this book. The tales concerning the origins of many innovative features of the magazine are quite good.Yagoda suggests the magazine pretty much ended with Shawn's departure in the late 1980s. He devotes eight pages at the end of the book to the three editors who followed Shawn. He says the median age of the readership grows older every year (not replacing subscribers) and most of current readership as such is owing to the retention of loyal readers. He quotes some of these readers who no longer actually read the magazine but have not given up their subscriptions. His book goes a long way toward explaining to me why I dropped my subscription a few years ago.

Kindergarten-Grade 3-A Siamese cat tells her children about their "great ancestor, Sagwa of China." That feline started off as a mischievous, pearl-white kitten who lived with her parents in the house of a greedy, autocratic magistrate. Her penchant for trouble lands her in a pot of ink, which stains her paws, nose, ears, and tail. The accident starts a chain of events that leads to the magistrate's tearful reformation, as well as to generations of cats that look Siamese but are actually Chinese. The artwork is a pastiche of images drawn from different sources. Many borders reproduce ancient Chinese textile patterns. While some of the human figures seem to have stepped from poster art done in the style of socialist realism, most resemble contemporary paintings from mass-produced Chinese New Year calendars. Librarians with long memories might recognize Kurt Wiese's exaggerated caricatures in the features of the magistrate and his Reader of Rules. Human and feline emotions are overdrawn and cliched, and the tightly controlled, prolix compositions employ a cacophony of colors. Why do Siamese cats have dark ears, paws, and tails? Sagwa is a pearly-white Chinese kitten who lives with her parents, Baba and Mama Miao, and her two siblings, Dongwa and Sheegwa, in the House of the Foolish Magistrate, who is in charge of issuing rules for all the people and animals in his province and makes a lot of silly proclamations. One day the Foolish Magistrate writes a decree that no one can sing until the sun goes down. He doesn't see Sagwa perched up high on a shelf. After he leaves, Sagwa decides to do something about it, so she jumps down, lands in the inkpot, and gets ink on her ears, paws, and tail, but she also blots out the word "not" on the paper. When it is read, it will say, "People must sing until the sun goes down." But what will the Foolish Magistrate do to Sagwa and her family when he finds out what has happened? When our boys were young, they occasionally watched the animated PBS series Sagwa. We even used some of the early reading books taken from the television show, which are credited to George Daugherty who produced it. One day while watching a segment with our younger son Jeremy, I noticed that it was based on characters taken from a children's book by Amy Tan, whose name I recognized but had not read any of her books. Tan is well known for her adult novels, such as The Joy Luck Club, The Kitchen God's Wife, The Hundred Secret Senses, and The Bonesetter's Daughter. I like the story of Sagwa because, in addition to being a fun folk-like tale for youngsters, it exemplifies and encourages bravery in the face of injustice. Also, we are "cat people," so it has a special interest for us. Originally published as The Chinese Siamese Cat, some editions are called Sagwa, the Chinese Siamese Cat, most likely due to the popularity of the animated show.

I love Amy Tan's adult novels, and my children have all loved the Sagwa cartoon. And yet I have only just now bought this book. The story is told of course in one of the episodes of the cartoon, but it is handled somewhat differently here--the Foolish Magistrate and his wife aren't the same good people as in the cartoon, so there is more depth here. The illustrations are lovely on a level with Ms. Tam's writing--very detailed and almost poetic.

This is a great story about how someone who is selfish and hard-hearted can be won over by others' happiness. Children can identify with the mischievous, inept kitten who inadvertently makes a difference in her community. Its only flaw, as I see it, is that it is a tad too wordy; wish it were more economical in the telling. But it carries an important message: good can flow from accidental errors--the swerve that produces a mighty change.

Like many, I bought this book to get the background on Sagwa after watching the TV show. This is a wonderful story, told by the mother cat about her ancestors. It is engaging for both the adult reader and my children. And the illustrations are captivating and complex, yet simple enough that my children always look very closely and study each page. (they are 4 and 3). The illustrations aren't at all like the TV show, and truly I like the book's illustrations better. They are more suited to the story. I also like this book because it presents a story that is different than most silly/giggle books, yet is still very interesting and entertaining for both the adult and children.

This is one of my favorite gifts to kids and to families with new babies. Beautifully written by the talented Amy Tan and with stunningly decorated pages/illustrations, the story is full of love, humor and sly wit. A joy to read out loud to kids - and a way to teach boys and girls the joys of reading on their own. I just wish they'd release in hardback again!

I originally bought a copy of this book when my children were very young. They loved the story and illustrations so much. Now they are grown up, my oldest smuggled the book away with her for when she has kids. I had to buy another copy for my other daughter. It is a gentle story about a cheeky little kitten who changed everything around her. we even have this story as an audiobook.

The book arrived in pristine condition and compare to others was very reasonably priced.

Not a lot of trips in NW New Mexico, which is really where so many tourists visit-- Santa Fe, Taos, etc. The drives we were able to do that covered that region were the normal route to take, so I didn't really need this book. It gave me literally one or two lines of additional info. about the areas I was passing through. Maybe we can use it again if we explore more of the southern and eastern parts of the state. No pictures and pretty limited overall, in my view.

Book arrived quickly and in excellent condition.We travelled along 5 scenic routes found inside.Directions were very good, descriptions were validated by our experience.New Mexico in mid-January was stunning, uncrowded and magical.We tripped up into southern Colorado; Durango, Mancos and Mesa Verde - can't say enough about these beauties.Grand, long views. Friendly folk, good food. Peaceful and plentiful.Wow. Looking forward to more road trips in the 4 Corners area.

Great searchability as an ebook, although likely easier to share with fellow travellers if in a hardcopy. (Definite packing advantage with ebook though!) Took a number of suggestions,. Don't think we did any of the suggested routes in full, but definitely found routes we were glad we didn't miss with the helpful info. Have used on multiple trips. (Anticipate using to confirm / refresh memory on locations of pictures as well!)

This paperback is poorly printed on recycled paper with badly reproduced black and white photos. The text and directions seem well written and helpful, although it’s too bad the writer’s words received such poor reproduction in printing.

REALLY??? black and white, cheap paper, poor binding, only useful thing are the maps!

I have bought this guide twice, once at an outdoor store in Silver City, NM and once on line. It is the only book or map that I have found that has a COMPLETE list of all kinds of camp grounds for car camps, trailer camps, access to national forest trails, everything!!

I love road trips and this book has inspired me to look into setting up a trip in my trusty Jeep.

"The Lightning-Struck Heart" reminds me a little of "The Princess Bride", but buffed up on 'roids and spewing an art supply store's stash of glitter- so, in other words: AWESOME! Like the aforementioned 80's classic, it abounds with characters too delightfully wacky for mere words on paper, throws around banter and drops witticisms like it's going out of style. Fantastical, right?Argh! I just can't stop sighing and smiling all over the book. It's a bit painful how funny it is- no, like I seriously started to worry for my physical well being...like should a person be able to laugh, non-stop, through 400 some-odd pages?No. They should not.For everyone's health and sanity...especially my elderly neighbors. My poor, poor, grumpy old neighbors trying to sleep on the other side of woefully thin walls. Oh well!So, what's to love about this book? First and foremost, the triad amazingness that is Sam, Gary and Tiggy. Sam is our hero with his wizardry, good heart and terminal case of word vomitus. Gary (yes, seriously!) is a shockingly kinky, gay, horn-less unicorn whose a$$hole smells of moonbeams and cookies and rages glitter. And, last but never least, is the half giant, Tiggy, who smashes and hugs in equal measures.There's also love bound knights, kidnapped princes, randy magical creatures, resigned elders and a myriad of others throughout the book. Each and every one, memorable and unique- TJ Klune-style! (That's a thing, now)But, I think what I enjoyed most about their misadventures in life and love, is the friendship. I know I've compared "The Lightning-Struck Heart" to "The Princess Bride", but it really stands on its own. It's full of heart, humor and is pushing classic status with its "love will find a way" message while still managing to be fresh and fun. You can't beat that! I wish I could crawl into Mr. Klune's brain and camp out (but totally in a non-creepy or murderous fashion). He's a genius :)It's late and I worked all day, so please forgive the rambling and get up all on this! The book! I mean the book...

"You and I have been talking, actually talking, for a little over three weeks. And in those three weeks, we've been attacked twice, a dragon came to the city and knocked you through a building, and now we're going to meet your ex to whom you almost gay fairy married. How are you even a real person?"I don't think I've ever laughed so hard and for so long when reading a book, or in this case listening to a book. The dialogue is absolutely HILARIOUS and I am soooooo happy I finally decided to start this book! In fact, I wish I hadn't waited so long...I don't want to go much into plot because I really don't want to spoil anything and take all the fun away but this story was very well told and even though it was longer than I thought it'd be, I never felt like it was dragging.All of these characters were AMAZING! Sam is adorable and quirky and so good hearted. He's just such a loveable sweetheart! Ryan was sweet too. I loved listening to him and Sam banter and dance around each other. There are no words to describe how much I love Gary and Tiggy! They were sooooo freakin hilarious and adorable! I really loved all of the side characters too. Sam's parents, Morgan, the King...they were all wonderful and loved Sam so much. I especially loved Sam and Morgan's relationship."Maybe I should have been embarrassed by my actions. Maybe I should have shown the slightest bit of decorum. I was the apprentice to the King's Wizard, after all.But f*** that. I hadn't seen my mentor in almost three months. I'd faced things I'd never seen before. I'd been loved and broken. I'd eaten a sh*tload of corn laced with a truth serum.So I don't know that I can be blamed for running full speed at him. I don't know that I can be blamed for the way my eyes burned when he smiled widely and opened his arms. I don't know that I can be blamed for the sound I made, that broken, wounded noise that crawled out of my throat when his arms wrapped around me. I felt his magic wash over me, and for the first time in weeks, I thought I was able to breathe. I let my forehead rest in the crook of his neck as he held me tightly."A book this hilarious should NOT have given me the amount of feels that it did!! But that's kind of what makes this such an awesome story...Not only does it have a ridiculous amount of humor (seriously...my sides still hurt from laughing so much) but it also has some really heart-breaking moments that I actually teared up for, which is crazy! I actually had to pause the audiobook for a minute to be like: "Am I REALLY about to cry right now???""It's all about the journey, Sam. One day you'll get your ending, but until then, remember it's about the journey. The things you've learned. The future you'll have. I know it may not seem like it right now, and I know it might hurt, but you will be ok. You're my apprentice. I expect nothing less of you."This book was just fantastic. Do yourself a favor and listen to this audiobook. Michael Lesley does a phenomenal job and I don't know if anyone could have performed this book any better. It is 100% worth it to listen to him tell the story. I really can't praise him enough!Do yourself a favor and get this audiobook and settle in for a great time!
