This somewhat small sized book is chocked full of guidance and suggestions and should be on the must-read list of all Christians involved with children. Moody Publishers sent me an early release of the book and the opinions are all my own. I'm a verified purchaser because I bought one to give away, I feel so strongly about this book. First of all, I love that it’s not intimidating by being a huge long read. I’m a busy mom and my time is precious. She gets straight to the point and this is a great size book to slip into my purse. Second, I’ve read many books on changing the heart but this is the first one that makes it so practical. There is a section at the end of each chapter on Things To Do and Things To Think About. Third, everything is grounded in scripture, which I love. You will be armed with plenty of scripture to point your child toward the Lord, and in a loving way. I thoroughly enjoy her guidance on taking off character traits that are not desirable and learning to replace them with those that are. Fourth, Kathy speaks to my heart by making sure we have a good relationship with our children. She guides you so you can build or repair a relationship with your child, and teaches you how to be a great coach for your child as well. This would make an excellent book for moms, dads, grandparents, those who are involved in children’s ministry, small group study, or husband-wife devotional/study. My husband and I have done quite a few of the Things To Do and it’s been so helpful to see our kids in a different way; to be able to help them start to change some character traits. My eyes have also been opened to some changes I can make to be a better parent as well. As it is noted in the book, more is caught than is taught about many things. Do yourself a favor and get this book and start reading it right away. It will inform, challenge, motivate, inspire, and give you hope. God has given you an amazing task of helping to shape a child’s heart and this book is an essential guide.
Dr. Kathy Koch has a way of getting down to the bare bones of a subject and helping us all move from knowledge to action. In this book, Start with the Heart, she provides motivation for parents and a mindset shift that helps us move from being policemen of behaviors to influencers of the heart. I recommend this book to any parent or grandparent. Go through it with a small group, buy a copy for a friend and read it together. You will read this and parent differently as a result - with heart - to the heart - and making a life-long difference for your children in the process.
I have so much respect for Dr. Kathy and her wisdom and I'm always on the edge of my seat when I hear her speak. I was so excited for this book and it did not disappoint! Thanks to Moody for the advance copy. A couple of highlights for me was that several times Dr. Kathy was really encouraging me as a parent - "Be brave" and "Let me encourage you". I feel empowered with real tools and ideas that I can incorporate as a parent. The book is easy to read and I will return to it often as a parenting resource. I really appreciated how she explained asking our kiddos different questions. It was a light bulb moment for me to just change my words a little bit. Dr. Kathy does not want us to be overwhelmed and truly desires to help parents guide children to their potential. This book could truly affect not just your parenting, but generations to come. Thanks Dr. Kathy for investing in us and our kiddos!
The subtitle of this pretty amazing book is: How to Motivate Your Kids to Be Compassionate, Responsible, and Brave (Even When You're Not Around). And the big title- Start with the Heart. Having read Screens and Teens and No More Perfect kids, I have appreciated Kathy Koch's work before. But this book, is so vital, so well done, so well rounded- I didn't expect to love it so!Starting with the heart and a real relationship built on love and connection with children is my inner mantra and a tip I share with anyone who wants advice. It makes an enormous difference when children know you love them (not dependent on their behavior) and only want to help them grow a little bit each day. Love really is the answer in impacting the next generation for Christ, and raising up a new body of believers who will thrive and grow to new depths in love and connection in the body of Christ.Dr. Kathy Koch is a book mentor of mine. She knows how to help others equip their children to become the best adults, she writes in a way that makes it simple and easy to apply with questions, tips, and story telling examples to move the reader forward in an uncharted path or to continue gaining skill in supporting children to become great grown ups! And this is my favorite book of hers so far!She also knows children, what makes them tic, how they learn, and approaches all of her books with this in mind. So it's not a one size fit all approach. It's individualized for different personality children and adults. This book has a larger and stronger biblical foundation and wisdom shared than I remember in her other books. Her principles have always been built on how God creates us and communes with us, but this book shows us how following His Word will make change happen in our lives and will help us identify what needs to change.Things I love about this book:Features:format- two color pages used just right to make a huge impact.Green headings throughout chapters, with smaller italics headings sometimes.Green tabs with motivational key points (so when you flip through you stop at them)Appendixes- these are worth the price of the book!Biblical Counsel with psychological, therapeutic strategies taught:Chapter 3: What will make change happen?Look at the Contents page...practical, manageable strategiesdeveloping a growth mindset, resiliency, tenacity, etc. GRIT- such a need in our world today!Modeling of the strategies including suggestions of what to say to help.I've read so many books on helping children grow in the past five years. Many from leading researchers and counselors on how to help children, and in this easy to read, easy to grasp and implement, as long as you are honest with yourself new book, I can tell you this book puts the best research based concepts into practice and the author makes it so realistic and easy to build on. I wish I'd had this book five years ago!I can't wait to hear what other parents love about this book, as I can see it being read and re-read as we seek to be the best parents we can for the children that God has given us! And Dr. Koch grasps how to make that work and possible. So prepare to dig in, take a few quiet breaks to pray and think about yourself and your style, so that you can address your kids needs and change yourself and your children with techniques that build one another up.Thankful to partner with Moody Publishing and get an advanced copy of this book.
