This book was an excellent true crime book. I remember the murders at the time because I lived in Wisconsin and was just a little younger than the victims. It was a real page turner, hard to put down. However, there were three things I disliked about the book:- The author decided it was necessary to change almost all the the names in the book, including the victims. I agree with many other reviewers that this was completely unnecessary, stupid even.- There were absolutely no pictures. A true crime book can't get 5 stars from me if there are no pictures. Since the author changed most of the names, no pictures. He still could have provided pictures of buildings, locations, houses, police officers, etc.- The hair analysis included in the testimony during the trial was completely understandable and boring. That was the only place that the book truly bogged down. I would try to finish the book with only a few pages left, but put it down over boredom and frustration. That was the second book in a row I read that bogged down in the forensic testimony of the trial, the last being Jody Picoult's fictional Plain Truth.I planned to give this book 5 stars the entire time I was reading it, but those three factors, especially the last, gave it a downgrade. Every time a new person of interest was brought in, I wondered if he would be the killer. False alibis eliminated some people. It is a very well-written, even exciting book except for those three complaints.
Very well written novelist treatment of a series of gruesome murders, in the style of In Cold Blood. Community reaction and police interactions are nicely spelled out. The author admits changing names to protect privacy and reputations. Great idea, but he goes too far in changing the name of the killer which was splashed all over the newspapers nationwide. In fairness, this book was written in 1976 and standards may have changed. Curiously, true names were used for the lawyers who are apparently immune to privacy and reputation damage. It is also fascinating to contemplate how police techniques and DNA analysis have changed the landscape. This is a good read; for a true names up date, try Wikipedia.
Interesting read for the first 3/4 of the book or so, although I lost a bit of interest at the end with the courtroom bla bla bla and skimmed a lot of that because it bores me. However, that's usually the case with any of the courtroom parts of these types of books. Other than the monotony of the end, I thought the beginning and middle were well written and I liked how the author did NOT dwell on things that were probably boring to most people.
The Michigan Murders: The True Story of the Ypsilanti Ripper’s Reign of Terror by Edward Keyes, tells the story of the brutal murder of six young woman and one thirteen year old girl in the college towns of Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti, Michigan. These crimes occurred between 1967 and 1969, when hitchhiking and walking through deserted areas did not necessarily inspire fear or caution.These were all brutal sexual murders. As is so often the case, the killer was questioned early in the investigation, but police did not take him seriously, and did not have enough evidence to tie him to the murders until an additional six women were killed. By that time, he had become sloppy and overconfident; when he was arrested, he never admitted to the crimes. He continues to deny them to this day as he serves life behind bars.He was only tried for the last murder, on circumstantial evidence, and one of the seven victims was tied through DNA evidence in 2014, to another man who was convicted of the murder. So one is left with a curious sense of void at the center of these crimes. Despite a conviction, questions linger. Points don’t match up. There is a curious sense that something is not yet resolved. It gives one a sad sense of the human inability to both discover and punish the evil ones among us.
I was in high school when the "Michigan Murders" took place. So I looked forward to reading this true crime story. The writing was excellent. It got bogged down in a few places where the author got a little too involved with minutia. However, it kept me turning the pages...even though I already knew how the story ended. My major complaints are:1 Why change the names of those involved? This was stupid. If he had written a book on the JFK assassination, would he have made the title, "Who Killed XYZ?"2. No pictures. Really? Not one photograph of anyone or anything? That's done in crime NOVELS, but not in TRUE CRIME STORIES as a rule of thumb.In any case, it was worth the read, especially if you were in the area during the time of the murders, or just wanted to know more about this gruesome crime against women.
Living nearby I found the book interesting as I was able to locate all of the sites. I found it unnecessary to have changed the names of the characters though. It's not as if no one read the news at that time.While there was a lot of speculation on events, it at least seemed consistent and gave the feeling of being there.Obviously the narrative should be taken with a pinch of salt as only the murderer would know the actual facts, but it's a good novel if nothing else.
A bizarre case with many twists and turns but Keyes masters it all with a deft touch. The pace never slows and that is a huge plus considering the story. Love the way Keyes retains complete mystery for the first half then once the evidence closes in concentrates on the accused. Once again this case was new to me though not to a lot of Americans no doubt and that probably added to the appeal from this reader but Keyes is a man who knows how to entertain and his intense research pays off in many ways. First class
An excellent well researched true crime drama. Although written forty years ago, it is still fresh. Not clear why the author changed the names of all the principles. (except for the psychic)There is some gruesome detail, but it was a gruesome crime spree. The author, who co-authored TheFrench Connection gives a captivating narrative.
